I can't tell you what ford did, but I recently put an early (pre smog) timing Chain and gears on my 81 200 and it did not seem to hurt things. I bought the timing gears and chain set on an engine builder's recommendation.
Rockauto sells the same timing chain gear set for the 1965 200 and the 1978 200.
I read that Ford advanced the 1978 camshaft timing. It was ground in the cam not the gears.
Ford racing in multiple print said the the 2.5 HSC rods were 5.---'' but they are 6.---'' about .050'' longer. Best to degree.
Ak Miller told me that the early 70's gears were retarded, but who knows for sure.
