installing hubs into new brake drums.

Is there anything special I need to do to remove my front hubs from my brake drums and install them into new ones [ 66 Mustang coupe,200, 4 lug]. Is it just a press fit or what" Thanks.

The studs are pressed into the hub, the drum is slipped over them, then a special die is used to stake the drum to the hub by expanding a small portion of the stud. To remove the drum, there is a special cutter that is normally used to cut the expanded part of the stud away, but sometimes they can simply be pressed back out. The downside is that simply pressing them sometimes damages the knurling that holds the stud.

take a ballpeen hammer and place the ball end on the stud. Take a BFH (big friggin hammer) and hit the ballpeen hammer very hard. This will force the studs out. When you are ready to assemble the hub and drum, you can use the lug nuts to pull the studs back in place.

Take care when hitting one hammer with another hammer!!! MAKE SURE YOU WEAR SAFTEY GLASSES. Hitting hardened steel with hardened steel could cause small splinters of steel to break off and fly. I am telling you this from experence. I had to have one dug out of my face once, got lucky it was not a eye!!!!

also be very careful not to break the studs when you use the lugnuts to press the drum back onto the hub. i broke one the last time i did this, be careful though and you'll be fine.
