intake / tranny fluid ?

1982 200 CID merc zephyr
I pulled the carb off the other day to install a new carb base gasket, upon doing so, I looked down in the intake to see what appeared to be " RED "
Transmission fluid puddled in the bottom. How is this possible ?
car smokes white smoke at start up and excelaration Only, not deaccel.
checking the oil level on the dip stick has not changed in 2000 miles, reads full. The tranny dip stick there is always none on the stick, no leaks noted. I changed tranny filter, tranny gasket and the vacume modulator thinking this would solve the problem, Not.
Is it possible that my modulator from the auto store is faulty ?
Any ideals here, So I can quit leaving a smoke screen whereever I go ?
If it were valve seals and leaving clouds of smoke, wouldnt my oil level be changing on the stick ?

Not if it's not oil.
Maybe it's oil through the pcv valve?
Isn't white smoke coolant?
Did you actually touch the red stuff in the intake to see if it was slippery?

I actually touched the RED stuff, It smells like tranny fluid, looks like tranny fluid, and feels like tranny fluid.
PCV valve rattles when I shake it.
White smoke coolant I have not a clue. anyone know ?

Do have you have the transmission vent tube running up to your intake manifold? It could be coming from there.

If you do have the vent tube running up to intake manifold vacuum, that would be the problem. Otherwise your symptoms are typical of a bad modulator- tranny fluid getting sucked through a bad modulator by manifold vacuum will end up in the intake. Also, ATF smolders/burns with a white smoke, not blue like heavier oil.

Vacume vent tube is not hooked directly to the intake, I have it hooked just to the left of the brake booster, at a 3 way junction mounted on the firewall. So I suppose it is a faulty vacume modulator right out of the box at my local Napa store. It is certaily WHITE smoke.
Just a pain to reach it and change it out again. Is there anyway to test the modulators?

It has to have vacume to operate it correct ?
or are you saying this to disconnect it to see if it stops the problemo, and manual shift thru the gears. A bit more explanation will help immensly !

If tranny fluid was being sucked up through the vacuum distribution block all the way to the manifold, then one would think you've got crap in all the lines and the distibution block?

Thats just it, there is no tranny fluid present in any of the other lines and none at the vacume junction box. So is rbohm trying to say disconnect it all together to see if it stops the white smoke and I pulled the carb again today and the puddle of tranny fluid remains in the bottom of the intake.

I have a '78, which is different than yours. Mine comes straight off a fitting on the manifold, I have no distribution block, and no power brakes.

Well I also have a fitting that is on the front on the manifold. I will move it there and see what happens, and plug the vacume on the distribution block.

replace your tranny modulator,ive had that problem before

Have had that several times on varous cars and it was always the vacuum modulator.
I will watch this post..if it is something different you discover I will get to add to my education!
