ok i have my car running with a 600 vac sec carb with a 2inch spacer and my problem is that the exhaust was glowing red. now i was reving high for around one minute to see if the secondaries were opening maybe 5000rpm to 3000rpm, they where not opening as far as i could tell (it was strating to get very dark and had no lights close enough). my question - is the reason that my exhaust red because my carb is running too rich or is it from letting of the gas and then getting back on it just letting to much fuel go through into the exhaust? i am only asuming that a red hot exhaust means that there is fuel burning in the pipes. correct me if i am wrong and all advise is welcome. thanks and i will stop rambling on now.

thanks Aaron

Aaron,
If you dont ask questions you wont find out the answers.
It is normal for the exhaust system to glow red in some running situations.
When a car is driving there is a lot of airflow and the throttle is generally in a light throttle situation. so not as lot of heat is generated.
But if a lot/heavy throttle with no air flow will heat up the exhaust to red hot and beyond.
Look at photos of engines on full power dyno runs.
Black smoke from the exhaust and poor operation will tell you if it is running too rich.

Hi,

If the ignition timing is too retarded this will also cause the exhaust pipes to glow.

When I first strarted my motor and ran the cam in, the exhaust started to glow red. By advancing the timing a bit, the glow was totally eliminated.

Only a sugestion!

Good point! A lot of the XE/XF distributors are not mechanically advancing any more... Clogged up solid.

I can fix them - it's not too hard, just precise. Or tell how to fix them.

Aaron , i think from what i had seen on the HOLLEY site your secondarys
wont open if your just revving the engine you need to have it under load.
They say to put a paper clip on the secondary bracket go for a drive then
inspect see if the clip has moved. You may need to get a vacuam gauge a check your manifold vacuam , and even get a set of Vacuam springs for
the carb and try different spring weights. Also if its getting black smoke just when you give the throttle a punch you may need to change the little plastic cam on the fuel pump on the carb.Have a look on the holley site in the tech section ,there a heap of info there .

thanks guys, so i don't have anything to worry about. hopefully it will be dyno tuned shortly. alloydave have you had yours on the dyno yet?

Aaron

Aaron , hasnt been on the dyno yet .In fact it hasnt moved out of the garage in about a month . Ive been saving my cash for my trip to bathurst .It needs a dyno for sure ,it runs ok at the moment but i might pull the engine first and do a check up on everything. I had a big problem
in the first week it ran. I pulled my dizzy to change the pick up coil and found the dizzy gear what was brand new looking like it had done 200000
miles  . I pulled the sump and cleaned everything out and changed to a new crow cams gear ,problem fixed. My falcon was running quite rich on a dud 465 holley for a while and i think i may have bore washed my engine :x .So its a quick in and out with the engine new rings and a bearing check .Its probably ok but when im driving it just plays in the back of my mind .Ive spent a lot of hours and cash and to just drive it and maybe do big damage its just not worth the risk. Its not a big job and i get all my parts a cost thru work ,so after bathurst i might shout myself a dyno for xmas.Hope you get your XT going sweet ,how about showing some pics. :)

cheers dave

i don't have a camera to take picks with. i am going to get one but i might just by a msd ignition as i was quoted just over $1000 for a digital 6 plus a hvc coil. do you reckon this is a good price or what? once i get it that will be it for under the hood untill next year maybe. and also what sort of money is dyno tuning worth? does anyone know?

Thanks Aaron
