It finally moves!

The Cortina is finally alive! I got it running on petrol about ten days ago. The motor had an absolute abundance of torque but still wasn't tuned correctly so I wasn't really happy with the power(although it was still the fastest car I had ever driven.) After putting on about 100km on the new motor, I had a nice little trip from where I live down to the coast to try to run it in some more(250km return trip). I was cruising at about 100-110, with a couple of runs up to higher speeds(not done by me because I'm still on P plates!) All was good until I started hearing this tapping noise from the motor. The car made it back fine, but I think I have a problem with one of my lifters, which will hopefully be fixed by this time next week.

Aside from that, after a few days in the shop, I am now running on dedicated LPG! The mixture was all set up with a gas analyser. It runs brilliantly, with more power than I ever had on petrol, and the sound is just awesome. This dedicated LPG setup has solved many of the performance issues normally associated with this motor. I will post some pics up ASAP for you guys to look at.

After seven months off the road, I am a long way towards having the Cortina that I always wanted. All that is left in regards to drivetrain is to bolt in the Celica 5 speed, put in a 2.92: LSD and get the motor dyno tuned. Then maybe I won't have to look under the bonnet every five minutes!

This is all that I have so far, but once I actually clean the engine bay, I'll post up some more. Especially when I put on my shiny ceramic coated custom extractors

:D Verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrryyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy nice.Don`t let me catch you in a dark alley,Green Machine.I`ll mug ya for that rig.Hehehe.

Yeah that looks really good. What kind of RW KW do you think you are pulling?

Hey 73GreenMachine,
nice build-up. That'll teach me for not looking in on the Aussie Forum more often as I mostly missed this one. It looks great! Any chance of you giving a quick dot point run-down on what's gone into the motor build??

Teddy :)

Hey Bretto looks f n sweet man. Good to here all you problems were sorted out witht the gas set up. Did you get your 2 grand back off johnny?

Hey my mate does want his engine stand back but theres something wrong with him, ive reminded him 3 times this month.
Can you PM me your number i lost it...doh.

Here is a rundown on my engine:

Redline Pod filter with 3â€￾ neck.
Impco 225 mixer and L series convertor.
Hitachi 60mm throttle body (sourced from a 2.4L Nissan Pintara) mounted on custom 58mm 90 degree mandrel bent adaptor.
Modified intake manifold, bored out and flowed to match adaptor.
Fully Ported and Polished cylinder head with polished combustion chambers, matched chamber volumes, reshaped intake and exhaust runners and valve bowls, hardened valve seats, K-Line valve guides and Teflon seals, decked 30 thou for 9.7:1 compression ratio.
Oversized valves 1.75" intake, backcut, and 1.49" exhaust.
Clifford Performance Port divider.
ACL pistons, 15.8cc dish.
Block decked 50thou, grouted.
Reground crankshaft.
Crow 282 degree camshaft.
Crow Heavy Duty valve springs, collets and retainers.
Rollmaster Dual roller timing chain with adjustable timing gears.
Bosch Electronic Distributor, modified and remapped.
Bosch High Energy HEC716 Ignition Coil.
NGK spark plugs (AP6FS) gapped at 0.045" (~1.1mm).
Pro Spark Performer 9mm Leads.
Powerbond Street Harmonic Balancer.
Three Core High Flow Radiator.
Twin 10â€￾ Thermofans.
Davies Craig Fan Controller.
6-2-1 extractors.
Two inch exhaust with single muffler, resonator and 3 inch tip.

Driveline:

Toyota W40 four speed manual gearbox, fully rebuilt.
Exedy 225mm Single plate clutch.
Exedy Heavy Duty pressure plate.
Custom Hydraulic Clutch assembly
Custom Short Throw Shifter.
Borg Warner 2.92:1 differential.

Future plans include a swap to the W50 5 speed gearbox, installing a 2.92:1 LSD centre and fitting a twin 2" exhaust system.

As for power, last time I ran on the dyno, I got 97.2 rwkw @4500rpm. This was without the bottom end mods such as grouting etc, without the head fixed, at a compression ratio of 8.6:1, with severe valve bouncing due to incorrect spring pressures and ignition cutout problems. It was also on petrol with a Weber 34ADM carby.
I feel the true power peak for this motor would have been at least 500rpm higher and that with it tuned, I probably would have got 100-105rwkw.

This time though with the mods listed above, I am hoping to get around 110-120rwkw, which with the chassis set up right, should get a 14 second pass down the quarter mile.

hey
nice work there with the old 1v ill see what the fire breather i have does on the dyno lby late january.
i think the cam is about 320deg on inlet and 290 exhaust and standerd strombergs cant supply engough fuel to let it run lol
oh i just got a 2v head as well for real cheap  i mabey going backwards in time but iam loving the sound this thing makes

Yeah it is the BEST! I went out tonight and turned it over just so I could hear the thing rev. When you put your foot in it just growls back at you like a pack of hungry dogs. Gotta be one of the nicest sounding big motors ever. I even get a slight overrun with the exhaust its awesome. The funny thing is that the exhaust is only 2" in diameter, but it is still loud enough to feel the rumble in your chest when you rev it
I am yet to put my foot in on the street yet, but the sound indicates that this is going to be one wild ride :D

yep lol now imagen that with TWIN 2 1/4 finshing under the driver with only 1 spark arester i whouldent call them mufflers cause the dont muffle
