The Cortina is finally alive! I got it running on petrol about ten days ago. The motor had an absolute abundance of torque but still wasn't tuned correctly so I wasn't really happy with the power(although it was still the fastest car I had ever driven.) After putting on about 100km on the new motor, I had a nice little trip from where I live down to the coast to try to run it in some more(250km return trip). I was cruising at about 100-110, with a couple of runs up to higher speeds(not done by me because I'm still on P plates!) All was good until I started hearing this tapping noise from the motor. The car made it back fine, but I think I have a problem with one of my lifters, which will hopefully be fixed by this time next week.
Aside from that, after a few days in the shop, I am now running on dedicated LPG! The mixture was all set up with a gas analyser. It runs brilliantly, with more power than I ever had on petrol, and the sound is just awesome. This dedicated LPG setup has solved many of the performance issues normally associated with this motor. I will post some pics up ASAP for you guys to look at.
After seven months off the road, I am a long way towards having the Cortina that I always wanted. All that is left in regards to drivetrain is to bolt in the Celica 5 speed, put in a 2.92: LSD and get the motor dyno tuned. Then maybe I won't have to look under the bonnet every five minutes!
