Well...kind of.

After running into a wiring problem last night that I finally figured out around 10pm, I got up early this morning to try to start the car up and break in the cam before I went to work. After about 5-10 minutes of cranking and trying stuff, car finally starts. I could only get it to start with the choke plate jammed open with a screw driver. (and it was about 40 out this morning)

BOY IS IT LOUD!!!

Engine sounds fine for the most part, but is extremely loud on the exhaust side of the engine. I'm pretty sure I've got an exhaust leak from either the manifold or the exhaust pipe. That is where it is the loudest but it is hard to hear the rest of the engine with the load sound. It is very rapid and load cyclic sound. I also smell and see some exhaust gases by the engine. I'll try to post the sound when I get home for some more help.

So...upon returning home, I'll be trying to locate the leak. I had one exhaust bolt that would not thread in, think that would be the problem?

Also, I'm only supposed to have the little exhaust donut on between the manifold and the pipe. I haven't installed the headers yet due to lack of funds to complete the exhaust system.

I at least hope it's only the exhaust.

are you saying you don't have that gasket there? that is prolly a big BIG part of the problem, i didn't have that one on my 'stang for a while, if i wanted to go get my gf late at night, definetly wasn't able to drive my mustang, i fixed that, and everything was fine, hard to tell if the engine was even runing afterwards, that suited my purposes just fine :D
i guess that the bolt could be part of it, but i'd try the gasket first
good luck

I have the donut gasket in there...how tight should that pipe end up being? Anyone have pictures of the manifold to exhaust pipe? It seems to me mine isn't right.

Just an idea, tighten the fasteners around the donut first. Then bring the matting pipe up to the hanger. Just to make sure that there is an excellent seal at the collector.

Good luck, Ric.

Actually, it looks like I fixed that problem, but found another. Part of the sound is coming from the oil pan. When I felt the oil pan while the engine was running, I could fill a hard hitting at the #6 cylinder. Looks like I may be buying that windage tray afterall. If I'm going to pull the oil pan, I'm going to replace it with something cool.

oww, that sucks...
how hard was the crank/rod striking? that couldn't do any damage could it?
i guess you'll find out when you pull the pan...

Mine has to be really tight on my 300, if you don't crank it down tight enough, and theres still the slightest gap there, it's going to be louder than you ever dreamed. I finally had to go get a grade 5 bolt on one side, and a locknut on the other, and shes quiet as can be now...
