Just started to have a loud knocking noise when I start my car. It is only happening when I have the ignition turned to "Start". It stops when the key is at the "ON" position.

Can a starter that is going bad make a loud knocking noise or should I look elsewhere?

Thanks!!

Usually when starters go they just go. But, they could knock, especially if there is damage to the teeth. If it occurs only in the start position, you are correct, start is a major probabily, but I suppose the solenoid could do it as well.

Check and make sure the start bolts are torqued right. Then try it again.

Thanks Slade,
I picked up a new starter and as I was putting it in, the transmission dipstick tube pulled out on me....right out of the transmission! What is that? Do you are does anyone know is this a part that just pushes into the hole in the transmission? It looks that way to me. There is a little rubber ring that might seal it when it is in.

You know, once you mess with something....something else always comes up. At least I have a chance to clean and paint that tube.

Just clean up the tube and push it back into the tranny. IIRC, there should be a strap near the top of the tube that is held in place by a starter bolt. Now would be a good time to replace the o-ring too!
