i am in two minds with my 250 2v and carb choice
i keep hearing holleyand then we get someone with knowledge of the engine saying that they dont like them.

we have a mild hyd cam crow 63666 standard 2v head, points dizzy from xb, standard ww stromberg carb and standard 2v air cleaner. block is zero decked with flat tops but not sure what the comp is.

the car is sluggish at best and from what i have heard from these great engines mine is not living up to the standard. hell i can't even break traction with 185's and a 4.01 diff.

sorry but im abit stumped.

cheers

Dude something aint right with your motor.......
My 2V with a 350 holley was doing burnouts with 3 guys in the back and 2.92 gears. Pulled the motor down 3 weeks later and 3 pistons fell apart in my hand :?:

A zero decked block and flattops and a .045 compressed gasket will give you around 11.4 - 11.5 static compression. If your cam is installed straight up you are running about 9:1 dynamic compression which is at least .5 too high for Premium fuel.
My first thought is your timing is greatly retarded to stop the engine pinging and thats affecting your performance.
Have you checked the timing?

As for Holleys, I think they are a great carb for drag racing, they are very easy to tune and there is heaps of parts and info readily available. I think the thing some people dont like is that they dont seem to be very nice carb for smooth part throttle driving. I know in my experience I've found the Thermoquads and Quadrajet carbs on V8 Fords and Holdens to be much smoother for sedate cruising than the same cars with a Holley.
Maybe its just my bad tuning

when checking my timing with a timing light i take the vac advance off and set it to about 9 degrees advance off the timing marks on the timing cover.

i have been told that this is the factory timing setting.
the cam is installed dot to dot on a rollmaster timing chain set.

i do have a 500 holley on a 302 clev that i was considering putting on the 2v but i dont wanna go to all the trouble if it aint gonna make a scrap of difference.

What gearbox is in the van? Could there be any losses there?

I'd look at possible issues of distributor wear, cam lobe wear, cam timing, fuelling (pressure and carb function), exhaust restrictions. Also do hot and cold, wet and dry compression tests.

If all that checks out OK, then consider trialling the 500 carb.

thanks for that
will give them all a try

the trans is a bw35 but i have a rebuild c4 to go in shortly, maybe the trans could be slipping, the car is only sluggish off the line at about 2000 rpm it picks up a little.

dizzy has not been recoed but i am thinking of putting in an xe unit recoed and curved to the cam.

will get back to you and let you know.
before the 2v head went on the car made 69rwkw with a log head and single barrel strom dont know if this is a decent figure or if this also points out any problems. the car was running very rich at wot, chris at blue power thinks it should have made more if the power valve was not open so early. but hey thats in the past now i have two barrels to play with.

cheers dell

Yeah, I would check the distributer out.

I fitted an electronic unit and it made a huge difference. Particularly as my vacuum advance was stuffed.

My car will spin the wheels for ever and pulls like a train.

My day driver is a BF turbo and when I say the 2V pulls I really mean it!
