Learning my lesson

Well, this will end my build and most likely my posts (at least for now) but I wanted to let anyone who’s interested know what the last changes and adjustments ended up being that made this a truly successful build. The last time I posted I was having the carb looked at because it seemed the engine was starving for fuel. What was found - my “new” carb had a thick layer of a jell like substance coating the bottom of the bowl this stuff also went into the ports that feed the accelerator pump all but closing them off. On top of that the float was set low and only allowing about a quarter inch of fuel into the bowl, effectively starving the carb of fuel. Also the pivot screw holding the fast idle cam was loose, letting the fast idle adjustment screw miss the cam intermittently. Adjustments made, carb back on and my problems at acceleration are gone… but I still don’t like what I’ll call the power curve. After about 25 or 30 mph, it runs better than it did before the build, but not like I think it should and after 60mph it’s done. So… enter FSD and wsa111 posts about distributer curving (which are still rattling around in my brain,) I pull the distributer and send it to Philbin Ind. in Portland for recurving (along with my build specs). I get a call from Mark at Philbin a couple days later asking “where did you get that distributor? it looked like it was just thrown together, I think you’ll be a lot happier now”. $75 later and I’m installing the newly recurved distributer, make a few timing/fuel adjustments and on to the test drive. GREAT GOOGLY MOOGLY! I am now a true believer in “ignition first” not that the carb didn’t have issues but I would never have gotten the results from carb adjustments that I got from that recurve! This engine performs at all speed/load combinations in a way I can only describe as PERFECT. She accelerates to 70mph without effort and has more to give. I couldn’t be any happier with the results of this build. Thanks FSD, wsa111 and everyone else frustrated with people who don’t get the importance of a “tuned ignition system” keep posting because once in a while you get through. :)

Good to know ( getting through comment LOL ) , enjoy your Six the way they actually can run without spending a ton on something that was never needed in the first place !( a Big Ugly 1975 Technology no advantage over a Duraspark unit ) .

 :wow:  your the best for sharing this brother.

This is way I like FSD. He's not aggressive, he just wants to give you a hand right off. Even the most gentle impartation from The Voice of Expereince is somewhat servere!

There is seamingly no search function on guys like him and Will who have loooots of experience, and these guys can sniff out a the problem under six feet of non critical info.

:hmmm: Now you probably won't need to do any carb tuning... .

Thanks Extasy , I have a Dist ( its for a V-8 ) Ford that is heading your way ( Australia ) in about a week or so , it will be the third one from down under , sending one to Sweden next week as well.

FSD is usually right about the dizzy. Very commonly overlooked source of problems. I had my recurved by a local race engine builder and it does make a very large difference, especially if you start with the junk you get from Autozone or the like. I tend to forget that's one of the first things I did with the DS2.
