Load-O-Matic

I have read much about the Durospark conversions on the 7 main motors What can be done on a early 170 to ditch or improve the Load-O-Matic. Thanks, JIM

How handy are you?

Option 1 is Pertronix. There are plenty of people who endorse this product, and as many who oppose it. Similar modules are available from Crane, Lumenition and Optospark. All can run as standalones, or with a module like Crane's Hi-6 or MSD's 6AL. All may use a standard coil or aftwermarket coil for hotter spark again. NONE will make up for a sticky or worn-out distributor, so check that first.

Option 2 is a modified Duraspark. You need to replace the oil pump for a 65-up 200 unit, find a matching 5/16" hex drive shaft, and turn down the pilot (tip) of the Duraspark shaft by 40 thou across its diameter. This will allow you to recurve the dizzy with a standard recurve kit, and use aftermarket modules as discussed before, or a regular Duraspark control box. Standard and aftermarket coils run well.

Option 3 is an Aussie distributor. This won't need lathe work but still requires the later oil pump and hex shaft, plus slight clearance grinding to the dizzy housing. It's harder to recurve than a Duraspark but with a stock module is apparently good to about 6000RPM. Will run with a variety of coils.

Hope this gets you started.

Regards, Adam.

I've done quite a few dizzy conversions for various engines. I'll have a look at the one on the pursuit engine and see if I can come up with an easy and cheap solution if you like? You want HEI to power some Denso Iridiums, yes?

Thanks, I don't really want to drop the pan but it looks like its my best bet. I would prefer a full mechanical advance as my 1940 carb has a spark control valve. Thanks for your help JIM

The only way to avoid dropping the pan will see you needing to modify a Duraspark crossed with a Load-o-Matic. The old input shaft will have to be spliced and TIG welded to the Duraspark shaft at the counterweight plate. You'll then have to bush down the Duraspark housing.

Sounds harder than it is. Finding some bronze bushing stock will be one of the more difficult bits.

i used the pertronix in mine and after reseting the timing (had to advace it alot since it sparked at a diff point than stock) it ran great. i can sortof notice a difference in driving, a little difference in mileage and a lot of difference in cold and hot starts. provided there is gas in the carb bowl it will immediately start up. it runs really great cold. i can get her hup in 30* weather and drive off immediately, purring like a kitten :D
not to mention i was 17 when i put it in myself, alone, dad offshore. it was fairly easy to do and quick. i'd recommend it if your not gonna convert distributors or go that far into it

actually i think dad's green horse has this also. its four barrel holds alot of gas after killing it, so you can go out when its cold and been sitting, and touch the key and its already running basically.
oh, and did they have the load 0 matic in 67? just wondering
