Im going to have around $2000 by the end of the summer, and i was looking for some good ways to get better performance. I was going to get a tach, that $77 custom air filter, and a header. That totals out to $507. What else should i get that doesnt need major work. Also on the headers, the bolts are likely to break, and that just makes the job a lot harder right? Im looking to get more hp than 155.

If you want more HP and you have $2,000 then I would seriously look into an Ausiie or Argie head with a 2V carb, headers and MSD ignitions sytem. These changes alone will give you a nice ...very nice...performance boost and will probably break the bank!
So you are 16 and into six cylinder Mustangs...You are a good man Mike (no pun intended)

My recommendations and in order of how I would purchase and install

1)Ford Six Performance parts header and high flow exhaust

2) The ignition upgrade Rick mentioned

3) And after you get those done, I would go for a Australian 250-2v head. You can go with the Argie head but keep in mind it needs a different header due to the Argie head not having siamesed exh ports.

3A) I would do the carb upgrade with the new head. And while you have engine apart I think this would be a good time to install a hipo cam.

With the budget you mentioned you could ahve a nice runnin I6 car.

i would go straight out and get the argie head, it comes with factory dual exhaust cast tube headers

Hi Mike,

I agree with Rick in that the 250 2V is hard to beat as a HIPO bolt on. A fully rebuilt head with a header (dual exhaust), a proper carb (Holley 2300 / 350), and 1.6 adjustable rockers will produce a significant increase in performance. Cost will be $1500 to $1700 if you can do the head pull / install yourself. However, before you commit yourself to anything you need to obtain, and study, a copy of the Falcon Performance Handbook. Also, you should contact AZCoupe for some insight into this project. He is also an excellent source for parts.

Buy the way, the car looks great. Keep up the good work.

Hi Mike,

The Orange County Mustang Club is sponsoring a car show at the City of Orange traffic circle on 7/13. You should take look if you can. Enter you car if you like. Will meet some nice people. Get some ideas. I have a black 66. Look me up if you go.

If you have an automatic, then the first thing you should do is get rid of it. $2000 should be plenty for a nice 5 speed swap, and should be some left over for a header.

You can do the engine stuff, which is great, but it will still run like a dog if you run it with pos slushbox. (trust me I know)

So how would I go about getting an Aussie Head and how much would it cost?? With the different headers that the Aussie add on would need, how would I get those too. And I have single exhaust. Also on the ignition, how hard is that to install??? And if I cant install it how much should it cost for the ignition and installation??? Finally, I think I will just stick with the stock automatic.

thanks guys

oh yea, how much is that handbook??

I was looking at http://www.fordsixparts.com/OZ250-2V Heads and it says the complete price is $625. Do you think that includes everything I need but headers and a carb??????? Im really interested in this Aussie head. I'm taking a autoshop summer class and I could install it there. But i have no experience digging into engines, would this upgrade include a lot of real engine work?? or just like take off the old one and bolt on the new?

why don't you send a PM to AzCoupe? it's his website, he's the one sellin, should be able to give ya all the answers (well, maybe not the meaning of life, but everything pertaining to what he has for sale)
i asked him 'bout his package deal (clickie here) a while back, if i remember correctly, these heads are sold used as-is, so they should need to be taken to a shop to get rebuilt for maximum performance potential, but with the price-tag it has, cost of shipping, plus the cost of rebuilding the head it might run ya dry in the wallet pretty quickly
far as i know, other than the machine-shop work, it should just be a bolt and go affair, normal tuning and trouble-shooting of course (you should be able to get all the help you need with that here at the site), you might want to check everything you can while you have it torn apart, cheap insurance

handbook = $14.95

pretty sure there are some more answers floatin 'round, good luck

PS - nice car, wish i had shopped around to find the best one i could when i bought mine... stupid parental instincts... (didn't want me to have a V8 cause they thought i'd get "in trouble" gonna show them one day...)

Well, as the oddbod heads are basically a true bolt-on, they should come into the equation fairly late.

It's possible to up the cam, lifters and valve springs with new timing gears, fit a shift kit, headers and exhaust and run the car quite efectively. The main thing is it won't have quite the grunt or will run out of breath sooner than with the freer-aspirated heads.

But then if you do acquire one, after it's worked up it is a major improvement, as you've already dotted the i's and crossed the t's. And the extra cost to install would only be a head gasket, basically.

Be prepared though, for possible issues such as excessive deck height. you may find such a situation, and it really needs to be remedied before you can get serious performance out of the motor.

A well-worked 250-2V with a dyno-tuned Holley can run big HP and still be very streetable.

Cheers, Adam.

if I were you I would get a 1979-1983 head have it milled and ported get a biger carb get the header a better cam of you`r liking roller rockers 3.55:1 gears and a shift kit BTW itts kinda kool to have some one on here my age( I`m 15 ) :D
