Mach'd Head Cost Factor

How much, should I consider paying someone to machine the log off and fabricate a flange for side drafts? Is it possible or should I wait til' I have the money for an overseas head, and just fab up the log like 'geezer'? If I found someone to machine it and fab a flange what would be best flat 3/8" mild steel stock or an aluminum/alloy or something else? I assume Ak Miller did this on the ones I have seen in the pictures posted around the forum. Can I use a template from the Aussie head or Argentine head? I took machine shop when I was young for a couple of years.....did some in the good ol' USN....But haven't attempted it in years, would be to afraid to get the speed/feed wrong, use the wrong arbor setup or cutter set and besides I would have to borrow someone's mill and I don't borrow others tools if I can avoid it...So, how much do those fella's get these days? please, input from anyone would help me in this decision.

where I live at its from $150-250 depending what you want done.. engine blocks are cleaned/bored/honed for $250

I paid $35.00 to have my head machined flat and $10.00 for the aluminum.

Plus several hours making the holes in the log and fabbing up the mounting plates
