Well, I have been putting off replaceing my fuel sending unit long enough (I ran out of gas a few nights ago...how embarasing  ).

Since I have to pull the tank anyway, I was going to take the oportunity to replace the tank and sender. However, I thought of a stupid question that some of you must have experience with.

What have others used in the past for temporary storage of the gas?

Right now, I am guessing there are about 8 gallons worth in the tank. I will try and burn off some this weekend just driving around, but I don't have a clue what my milage is and don't want to run out on the road again.

I have a couple of 5 gallon fuel containers. They also double as emergency heating oil containers (or vice versa as they are primarily for heating oil). They run like $10 from home depot.

Plastic 5 or 6 gallon jugs will do well.

When the tank in my '70 Maverick sprung a leak in high school, I removed the tank to repair it.

But - - - the car was my driver, so I filled the hole in the trunk where the tank was a with a piece of plywood and drove around with a 5-gallon outboard gas tank in the trunk. I was 17 at the time :)
