im currently restoring a 1959 ford f-250 with a 223 and a towing 4speed. the truck cant get past 60 mph. the truck has 4.56 gears that will be swaped out for 3.00s. the engine will also be replaced with a new 223. do yall think it would be better suited for the road then?

I have a 223 and a/t in my '57 Fairlane and maxes out at about 70mph on the highway. I can push her a little faster, but it sounds like it's struggling. The 223 is a workhorse, but definitely not a thoroughbred!

BTW - you might get more responses to this in the "Vintage Inline Sixes" forum down near the bottom of the list.

HELLO CRM318

.....I LOOKED AT YOUR FIG. AND CAME UP WITH:

..4.56 GR. = ABOUT 18.9 MPH PER 1000. 60 MPH =ABOUT 3,200 RPM.

..3.00 GR. =ABOUT 28.8 MPH PER 1000. 60 MPH=ABOUT 2,085 RPM.

.....THIS WAS WITH A 29 INCH TIRE AND ALL ELSE THE SAME.

YOUR HIWAY SPEED MIGHT NOT BE MUCH HIGHER BUT YOUR RPM'S WILL SURE BE LOWER. IT WILL GIVE LONGER LIFE ON THE NEW 223!!! YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO HERE THE RADIO NOW!!! :D :D :D
