May I see pics of your cable throttle setup please?

I bought a cable throttle from Summit and I have been trying to make it work with my Holley 2bbl carburetor. After several days of work I am still unsuccessful. I very closely followed CobraSix's cable setup seen here. I installed a V8 pedal rod, used the coil as a mounting point with aluminum flat stock, as well as the valve cover. I have the valve cover bracket towards the front, before the cap on the valve cover. I am using the Clifford carb adapter, which puts the carburetor throttle arm on the passenger side. The problem is that when I work the pedal, the cable pulls diagonally. When I let go of the pedal, the cable does not allow the throttle to return to its original position. I have tried using a return spring but it still does not bring the throttle arm back in place. I would like to see some pictures of cable throttles applications on Holley 2bbl carbs.

I am wondering why the hell I even started "upgrading" my inline six. The Jet-Hot coating on my header failed and it is rusting. I think I made my dual exhaust too big: (2.5" diameter. I figured this was alright because the header outlets were 2.5." I did not know any better at the time. I also ran them straight back. I should have made an H or X pipe. The 2bbl carburetor (on my second one) has been nothing but trouble since the day I installed it. None of my throttle linkages have worked out. I have a show coming up this Sunday...I paid $10.00 to register and I probably will not be ready. I have not driven my Mustang in...let's see...probably nine months.

As everyone else around me is saying: "Why didn't I just leave it alone." :(

Bill, think you could clean up that filthy engine a bit before you post pictures again? :P

The throttle arm of the carburetor is parallel to the passenger side shock tower.

The problem is that the cable wants to pull diagonally from the valve cover mounting bracket.

Because (I believe) of that harsh diagonal pull the throttle arm on the carburetor will not return to its original position even with a return spring. I cannot find a way to achieve a nice straight-on pull from the cable with the carburetor throttle arm in that position.

Also, I have a funky throttle arm. It is not a ball end joint. It is a metal piece with a 90 degree bend towards the passenger side. At idle it (looking at it from the passenger side fender straight-on) points to the left (firewall) at about a 70-80 degree angle. I bolted a ball joint to the throttle arm but the ball joint is then at the same angle as the throttle arm. This might be another reason why the cable does not allow the throttle arm to return to idle. I bought the Lokar 36 in. cable. The end of the cable that recieves the ball joint is pointed slightly upwards because of the ball joint on the throttle arm being pointed towards the firewall. I wish I had a digital camera so I could post some recent pictures.

Dude, I'm sure that to get a nice smooth pull, you will need to have the cable pulling in the same line as the linkage travel. Otherwise it will end up binding just about every time.

I'm going to have the exact same setup as you do (5200 on a Clifford adapter). I'm planning on building a custom bracket and attaching it to the baseplate of the Clifford adapter.

Local autozone will have a universal throttle cable setup. You might even be able to get one of the brackets to work.

Everytime I start to mess with it and see how close my car is for a V-8 (V-8 suspension, tranny, etc) and how much money I have sunk into the 200. However, popping the hoods makes it worthwhile. Doing something different. Stay the path. If you search my posts, you'll see my same doubts just about a year ago.

For the cable throttle. It's not shown well in my pictures, but I actually have 2 return springs on my set up. One on the end of the V-8 pedal rod in the engine bay the pulls the gas pedal back to normal position when I let off the gas. Otherwise, it ends up 'floating' with slack in the cable. That is a very very light tension spring, literally, just enough to pull it to position. I have another spring on the throttle linkage on the carb. That a normal tension spring that is used to close the throttle plates to full closed. Make sense? Now, due to the arrangement of my 4V carb with the primaries parallel to the crank, I had to attach the spring to the shock tower to get the best angle to pull it closed without mega tension on the spring. You may have more luck with an attachment point of the log. Maybe try attaching the pull end of the cable on the shock tower, may give you a better pull. It is key to make the pull from the attached end to the carb as straight as possible.

ryan's right, bill, you set the bar pretty high with that engine compartment. thing of beauty.

good pics and advice, i'll need to do this a few weeks when my head returns from the machine shop ready for a 2-bbl. i did not follow someone's advice, to do one thing at a time and get it right. i got the car all torn apart and am doing six things to it at once. just too excited, i guess. not to mention broke....

Does this help?

I used the pedal from the 79 fairmont doner car but any cable pedal would probably work. The bracket is basicly the same as lokar's universal bracket but a generic brand name. I can take close ups if needed.[/img]

Thanks Kustom Skylark.

A closeup would be great along with a drivers side shot of the engine. Why are there two cables? Where are the other mounting points, if any?

I'll go out an take a closeup later today. The second cable is my kickdown, I have a C-4. The only mounting points I have are on the carb base and on the firewall. The cable doesn't make any real sharp turns so it works pretty good. I made the parts that are bolted onto the carb likage out of flat aluminum, they arn't real pretty but work great.

ok here they are

This one shows the cable from the firewall.

Then it just crosses up and over the valve cover.

Here is a close up of the bracket and everything by the carb. I think you can get one of these brackets at AutoZone in the section where they have all the goofy rice burner "speed parts".

question about the other end - i see mention of the V8 pedal rod. is that the hot setup? and is that what's meant by the bracket back at the coil?

thanks, ordering stuff today for this, looks like i missed a few details...

The V8 pedal rod works very well for this setup. The bracket at the coil was a fastening point for Slade's setup. The cable throttle needs at least one point where it can "pull" from. Mounting points will depend on the setup.
