maybe its time for a better exhaust and carb.

ok heres the scoop as from my past posts and all. the engine is a 1980 200 ci. stock rebuild with a CI 274/274 112 cam. jeep. 4.0 valve springs .adjustable rockers ,port work, backcut valves. unshrouded chambers. approx. 8.7 c.r. . the engine has about a 1000 miles on it since rebuild and through all my tinkering with getting it timed right. ive noticed the plugs are light tan almost a bone white color and its caked on the plugs. chiping off when you rub the deposits with your fingernail.

also my distributor sounds like its about to come apart inside. its sounds like a clikc click clack........clikc ..clikc....click clack.... could this be bad /old/defective advance springs. and on another not. the car still has the stock canister type manifold. no internals its just empty. when i rev the engine all the exhaust sound is coming from the engine compartment not the exhaust. and from another standpoint when i was behind the car listening to the exhaust i covered the exhaust pipe and the idle cleaned up . is this bc of my stock exhaust sytem with only about 3 ft. of 2.25 pipe leading into a flowmaster 44 and back out the stock dia. tailpipes. could anyone help with this. i know it might seem as if i am being obscure about my questions.but someone has to have had these things happen to them. if anyone could help it would greatly be apreciated.thnks

sctty1986,
What is your timing set at?
Is your cam a solid lifter or hydraulic lifter? That is a big cam.
Look under your distributor car, it sounds like your rotor is hitting the copper leads in the cap. (That happened to me.)

What is your Carburetor?
Take care,
Ken

Check to see if the "star" wheel on the ditributor shaft is making contact with the magnet.
I had one do that after a rebuild.
It could very well be a busted part in there too.

It sounds like you might have a backpressure issue with your exhaust, if it runs better with your hand capped over the pipe. I'm told that lowering the backpressure leans out your mixture, and your plugs devinitly seem to show a lean enviropnment. You might have an exhaust leak with all the noise under he hood (I have one now myself), so maybe if you can find and fix that you might be on the right track. I'd do that before messing with the carb jetting.

Howdy Sctty and all:

I'm guessing that you are going to be chasing a couple of different issues. The noise from the distributor is not normal, You've got a couple of suggestions to check out. Do that first to eliminate the problem that is causing the clicking in the distributor.

Next assess the carbs tune with the initial timing checked and set. Next add a vacuum gauge to the carb to adjust the low speed air screw to the highest vacuum reading at the lowest idle speed. I'd assess, at this point with a new or newly cleaned set of spark plugs in the same heat range that you've been using. Unfortunately the Stock OEM 1980 carb, the Holley #1946 doesn't offer much tuning variations other than the low speed air screw and the idle speed.

If the symptoms persist- Then move on to the exhaust. Do a visual check looking for crack, crimps and/or crushed sections. I'd be suspicious of the cobbled system and the cat canister. My guess is that you will, someday, want to move away from the 1980 exhaust manifold and system. If the distributor and carb clean up and quiet down with the above suggestion, that leave you free to tackle the exhaust.

Keep us posted.

Adios, David
