OK
I have a 66 mustang 200 L6 auto.
I want to up my performance a little for now.
Later on (5 or 6 years down the road)i want to turbo but for now im thinking about headers, dual flowmaster 40's,a 2 brl carb and a mild cam.
Does anyone have this set up? What kind of performance can i expect out of these upgrades?I know this is kinda vague but im hoping someone wth this set up can chime in and shine some light on this subject.
Thanks Matt

8) build your engine with the turbo in mind now, that way you dont have toe change anything when you install the turbo. you want a cam with 112 degree lobe centers to trick the engine into thinking it has higher compression at low speeds than it really does. this will also help when you pop the turbo on. keep your compression ratio at around 9:1 so you can run 10psi boost pressure. if you are thinking of installing mike's new head when you go to the turbo, then go ahead and raise the compression ratio up to around 10:1. with the 2bbl carb, and header you should see the car pick up and run in the 16's, maybe high 15's in the 1/4 mile, and that is enough to surprise a lot of people. i also recommed getting rid of the stock load-o-matic distributor and point controlled ignition, and run a dual diaphram duraspark distributor. this way when you install the turbo, you can set up a boost retard function just by adding a line. set the rest of the short block up for the turbo as well. use forged pistons to handle the boost. by the way i recommend running a direct mount 2bbl carb for better airflow.

Ok are you saying that with 10:1 comp.,headers and a 2 barl carb i could run low 16's maybe high 15's? Or are you saying ill have to be tuboed and at 10 psi for it to run 15's?
I want my final result to run mid to low 14's in the 1/4.

Do they make gears for a stock 6 cyl rearend? 373,410?

1966I6, They did make gears for the 2.77 rear end. You will have to search eBay and Craigslist. I purchased a rear end from a guy thinking that it had the stock gears in it. I bought a set of 3.55 gears off eBay to put into the rear. I opened the cover and would you believe 3.25 gears where already in the rear end. Installed it on the 66 Mustang and what a difference. I think the rear end that I bought from the guy was in a Sprint 66 Mustang. Paid $50. All I had to do was change the oil and paint it black, looks new.

You shouldn't need a 10PSI turbo setup to get 15 seconds. However, you probably will need that 10:1 CR, a well-chosen carb, premium fuel and a good driveline (either mildly kitted auto or a stick).

Investing in a wideband 02 sensor kit like the Innovate LM1, may help in getting the carb tuned right. Similarly, the G-tech type of performance monitor can help with minor aspects of chassis tuning in addition to raw times - seat of the pants can be handy, but it has its limitations. Consider both as investments for the long haul.

The rear ratios you mention are almost certainly too slow for a six. 3.50 would suit more, and even 3.25 if the car will see much street driving.
