A question for czln6 or any one who's been there. What's the safe limit on amount can remove from 250 block? Can't find this any where. I have forged dished pistons already and am afraid of cast ones ----- from experience. Thanks.

Howdy Back:

Are your asking about decking the top of the block? I took .070" off of my current block. No problems, so far. With the taller 255 V8 pistons that much will get you to a zero deck height. I would not recommend going any farther without sonic testing to maintain at least .100" deck thickness.

IF you're asking about an overboring, less is better for cylinder wall rigidity, but some here have gone to .070" with use of AMC 258 pistons.

FYI block castings and thicknesses can vary so there are no guarentees.

Good luck.

Adios, David

79Thanks very much CZLN6. I enjoy your hand book ----wish I had it years ago! After studing it,I realized compression would be too low with 79 cyl head and 280' cam intended now. Engine currently uses '65 casting milled 070 with 276' cam. Suppose I'll have to deck th' block and mill th' head too, if I want to use current pistons. Thanks again. Gary

I went with 0.030 off the top of the block to get basically zero deck height... all is good.

My 69 250 Block was milled .100 , and the head .120 ( that wasn't the plan but it came loose at the machine shops fixture and too that to clean ) I had planed on .060 , it was a Brand new in the Box head ,the one mentioned in the Old hot Rod article about Building a stout Falcon 6 , the Mavi GT , so far so good, Have only broken in the came , , of course I run 110 in it , have to at 12.3-1 LOL , just so happens that Pusrods for a FE 390-428 Roller cam combo fit the bill , as the ones I got from Clifford were a 1/4 inch to LONG , go figgure , LOL

:) Hi FSD.Considering that the .100 of block decking+.120 off the head,thats almost a 1/4"
lost combined. No wonder that the Cliffords were almost 1/4" short.Glad that you were able to resolve the problem ok with the pushrods.
Good luck.Have fun.
Leo

Thanks everyone. Sorryabout your head FSD . Please keep us posted as to how your castings hold up.

Thanks,
