We have been looking into the possiblities of producing roller cams. But have a couple hurdles to over come first.

#1: There are no roller cores in existence.
#2: Need to design and produce custom lifters with extended tie bars.
#3: Need to develope custom profiles and produce the patterns.

Well, there was no need to look at #2 & #3 unless we could overcome #1 first. Normally to get a custom core produced, by one of the two US companies that make the cores, you need to order a minimum of 2000 blanks. That would be financially impossible for me, as I seriously doubt I could sell that many in the required time frame. But I don't give up easily, so I called and talked to one of the companies a couple months ago and explained my situation. I had the good fortune of being personally refered to the owner, which really helps. Today, he sent me a reply, agreeing to produce the blanks in quantities suitable to make this a doable project. :D

Now comes hurdle #2, designing and producing a custom lifter. If I can get past this step, number three is a piece of cake. So keep your fingers crossed. Even if I can work out a successful lifter design, it doesn't mean I'll be able to get them produced at a reasonable cost/quantity. But I've been on a good streak lately, so ya never know.

With that said, I'm running a poll to see how much interest there is in them. I may do the same with some of the other products were looking into, but want to see how this one goes first.

as long as it is cheaper than the head

could the SBF lifters be used with a custom tiebar? I was just looking at this 200 block I literally have sitting next to me (CAD project for school) and the only real tough part is #1 and #12 lifters as they are in enclosed pockets...but maybe a simple bolt from the timing cover area to keep it from spinning? I really have been tempted to toss the block on the mill and open up the lifter valley a little so that the lifters can be dropped in easier from on top (could be done with a die grinder too)

now on a hijack....

MSD makes a drop in "dummy" shaft for a crank trigger that BARELY sticks out the block (I think it is a modded GM cam sensor) I would love one of those for the 200 for a plug and play port EFI and DIS setup. while the crane part seems nice I am just not seeing boost retard and everything I need in it and seems like it would be pricey.

Not only yes, hell yes!!!

And Im even more interested since I actually am employeed now and can start spending money on the Stangs again. I was laid off for 3 years to the day so nothing much has happened in lamost 2 years since I sold my Oz 2V head.

A roller cam and the roller rockers will go along way to freeing up horsepower lost to friction.

Im excited.

Please, please check with the following report of an American doing a roller cam for the X-flow 250 in an Econoracers:-

Sounds a whole lot safer.

Talk to Crow Cams. Tell them what you want. They have a specialised Engine Analyser program for there own benifit. Talk or Email Ron Spencer and see what he says.

Simple rule is the person selling the cam has to sing for his supper.

Chris Gable from Street Machine Australia interviewed Ron Spencer 15 years ago and publicized his work in "Tough 6's".

Ron did some specialist roller cam work for a Texan racer called JR in 1990. They made a roller cam for his Eccono Drag racer. Of that, Crow marketing man Robert Henty said in 1990

"It's ironic in a way that we (Australians) are taking six cylinder engine technology to the States".

It seams that we have lost 15 years of information somewhere, so my guess is hit up Crow for some info.

We all know the good old log and 2V/ME/SP head engines have different cam sequence, but I can't help but think there may be a way to split your investment costs and help out every Ford small six owner on the planet! Ron Spencer would help out if you could see some common ground.

The Argentine guys have bulk experience in the red line 7000 zone with theres. All you need is the volume to make a good comercial decision. Older non cross flow cores are not being made in Australia, and Yella Terra and others are finding it real hard to get good quality cores for alloy heads too.

There is an environmental issue. It makes sense to remachine Ford sixes, and with a great roller cam, then lots of people would start using them. In the next few years, all those T5 5 speed gearboxes and alloy heads and Fox Mustangs are going to become great stuff for hot rodders.

Que FSPP!

No, it won't. The X-flow has a different intake exhast order. But the core item could be a great money spinner. All it needs is the right lifters and tie bar, and Aussies and Americans could then share some of the tooling costs.

Well, count me in AS LONG AS I can buy a couple of blanks. I already have a grinder that ground the cam for my vee-eight.

I don't think the core could be ground to suit crossflow valve positions. From what I've seen of cam cores, the lobes are already there, just lumpy and oversize. Can Crow not source a crossflow roller billet?

Mike: One question though? With the new head you're developing and the other possible products (crank, rods, pistons) would a roller cam make THAT much of adifference?

It's just keeps getting better,& better & better....it's a pretty goood time to be a Ford Inliner...... 8) ! OO6.

Obviously, I'd be interested! :D As far as the roller lifter part goes, Doesnt the FE and the small six use the same lifter? The tie bars would have to be different but just a redesign?

Later,

Doug
