More spark going from points to DSII

Howdy,

Does the DSII give more spark or is it more controlled spark over points, and is this using the standard coil? I am converting over now and wondered if I needed to buy a higher voltage coil...anyone changed coils, from low to a higher voltage while having the DSII installed already? Just needing a little more spark with my turbo application. Would using a coil such as a TFI running a full 12 volts have any advantages than the higher voltage coil running thru the ballast resistor? Sorry about the too many questions, they all popped into my head at once. Thanks again as always everyone.

If I recall correctly, an electronic ignition will deliver some more energy to the plugs than a points system. I don't know that it is really significant enough to enhance performance assuming that the points system is well tuned and in good condition. The electronic system is a more instantaneous and more precise switching device. The electronic ignition allows the coil a tad more time to saturate and collapse on each firing. The coil can build to a slightly higher level each time. The coils may also be a bit more efficient than the older points coils.

I ain't no electrical guru, but it seems I read this stuff in Jacobs Ignitions propoganda book.

Howdy All:

Yes, a DS II system, including the coil will deliver a hotter, larger and more consistant spark than a point system. The DS II specs a plug gap of .050" which is part of the bigger spark.

The DS II coil is hotter than the point system coil.

I upgrade to an MSD DS II coil and could tell no difference in spark quality.

Thank you gentlemen, that's the info I was looking for.
So, the DSII does have it's own coil, I am still using the points type coil (oil filled), is there really a difference b/tw the two? My points coil has the threaded top posts, and I know the DSII has the prongs on top w/ the slip on top cover. Maybe a difference in ohm setting b/tw them?

Use the TFI coil, it is what Ford upgraded to from the DS2 setup. Check out www.gofastforless.com for some good information before buying anything. I am running a DS2 with TFI coil and an HEI control module. Works great.
