However, the breakthrough voltage as you call it depends on the resistance between the hot side and gnd. If you increase the resistance, IE gap the plugs wider or run a denser mixture, you are going to increase the voltage the coil ramps up to.

In a situation where you have a plug that's really badly fouled or otherwise, you would get very high resistance and as a result very high breakthrough voltage....

Precisely. This is readily observeable with a suitable O-scope. Those fancy 40,000 volt coils rarely if ever actually develop that much voltage.

That Orange wire hurts BAD!

Well I hooked it up and the $25 MSD didn't work. The junkyard has a 30 day exchange so I figured I have 30 days to fix it. A few nights with my tester and a trip to radio shack and I got it going. Wow, what a zap! I haven't even hooked up the TFI coil or heavier plug wires yet.
It helped with my idle problems quite a bit- definitely noticable. The best thing it did is make me look even closer at my carb when it still idled bad. I'm leaking fuel/sucking air at the carb base something awful.

So I guess to answer my own question from the top of this forum... Yes, $25 is worth it for a MSD module. :shockin:

Not a stock part, it's a MSD 6200. Looks like every other MSD box in the world.
