I have a Pertronix unit in the distributor on my '68 200 cid engine. I was wondering if I can trigger a MSD unit with the pertronix to get a fatter spark? Have any of you done this? If so, how did it work out?
Thanks,
Russ
I have had a Pertonix and an MSD BOX in my Mustang for over 10 years. Look at the last page of the instructions below to see how the MSD box wires into the Pertronix.
On another car, I do not have the Pertronix and I use the points to trigger the MSD. The contacts on the points do not show any wear since they are not carrying much load. They are used as a simple low energy switch to trigger the MSD. So the Pertornix is not necessary if you are going to and MSD.
The MSD will help prevent and ignition system from fouling out and smooth out the idle. Although it treats the symptoms rather than fixing the problems, the MSD has kept my plugs clean despite the rich jetting of my car that has dual carbs.
I have a points triggered 6 box in my boat and now constantly have to clean the points. The are not wearing, the thing just wont start sometimes. It does sit for weeks at a time sometimes so that could be part of it. In the last 15 years of owning the boat I have never had to do anything with the point other than replace them every few years. When I put on the MSD I was unable to get the my usual blue streak brand points so that could be part of it also.
