I have just rebuilt my 200 and C4 in my 64.5 mustang convert and now I need to do the exhaust.Ihave a few upgrades in my rebuild and have gone with a header. My question is what muffler and size of pipe?I want a muffler that is as quiet as possible.Would rather listen to my tunes than the car.

Thanks in advance

Stevestang, I am getting ready to do my exhaust too. Now I know people r gonna say use the search feature, but here goes anyway. I am no expert, but I have done quite a few searches on this. The general rule of thumb that I have found is not to go any bigger than 2.25 on an otherwise stock engine. As for mufflers from what I have read generic turbos will produce a more aggressive sound than stock but not as aggressive as flowmasters. Do a search for wallaka's post he has a few sound clips that I found helpful. Also just to get a feel for the flows which is what I will be goin with, check out youtube. Type in 1966 ford falcon and you will see the video. That vid conviced me. Later anotherhassel

I just started my car up for the first time in many months after putting headers on and running new exhaust. I bought 2 Raptor turbo mufflers from Advance Auto and ran 2.25" pipe. I think I should of went with 2" as it idles a bit funny. I did the larger so down the road I could upgrade engine stuff.
They do have a lower deeper tone but nothing too bad like the Flowmasters would.

I want to share some pictures I took.

I second the generic turbo mufflers. They will have a bit of a rumble to them, but generally they are quiet from inside the car. In my vert, I hardly hear them unless I really punch on the gas. I do hear them at idle, but it is a nice sound and not overpowering.

I do not recommend Flowmasters. I tried the "quiet" series 50 and I hated them. In fact, the only time I liked them was at WOT and at highway speeds (when they finally got quiet). Maybe in my younger days I would have kepts the 50s but not anymore.

I went with generic turbo and 2 1/4" single pipe header (per AZCpoupe's recommendation). It has a nice low rumbling sound, not a growl. I like it.

I love that look of pipes through the valance!

Personally, I don't like dual exhaust on a six cause I feel it's trying to make it appear like something it's not, a V8. But duals out the valance is a great look!

One thing I bought was a rear brake hose from a '67. The local Mustang place had a box of hoses but would of had to order a "66 dual exhaust brake hose. I saw one marked '67 on it that had the bracket on it like the dual exhaust one so I bought it and it worked. It is a little tight area with the pipe on the drivers side and with more time, patience, and a bender I could of made the bend over the axle better(higher).
The PO put in that dual exhaust valance but blocked off the holes and put bumperettes over them, I knew one day I would open them up for duals. :D
