Mustang Update:

Hi,

It has been quite a while since I posted an update on my projects. The Mustang is (and has been) running with a new 2bbl carburetor and an electronic ignition system. Here is a summary of the summer projects:

Holley 5200 2bbl carburetor (required fabrication of an adapter plate for the air cleaner and a new fuel line setup)
Pertronix Flamethrower Coil
Pertronix Electronic Ignition
Autolite Spark Plugs (.050" gap)
Bosch 7mm Spark Plug Wires

I got rid of my old fuel line and bent my own. I routed it behind the engine past the firewall. I installed a clear fuel filter. I set the timing at 12* BTDC. Is this what I should have it at with the upgrades that I have done? I have noticed that my car does not accelerate very fast unless I am already at speeds of 45 mph and above. When I floor it and the second valve opens up then it really speeds up. I am not happy with acceleration from a standstill. I had more acceleration with my old 1bbl carburetor. Could my timing be off? Would this cause poor acceleration? I am pretty sure there is no problem with fuel flow.

Despite many setbacks I still made to the local Boyertown car show on September 4th. The previous night, in the evening (with little light left) my girlfriend's father Bud (I had been previously referring to him as Al but that is his professional name) came over and helped me install new brake fluid and he also helped me bleed the brakes. He did a great job. My brakes have never worked so well. The morning of the show the Mustang had trouble starting. On one of the starting attempts, there was a backfire out of the carburetor  . I let the smoke clear and tried again. Success. :D Bud told me my starting problems were do to my choke lever being broken. The choke lever is broken so the choke stays open all the time. I will have to fix that.

Enough of my insane ramblings,

I hope everyone has a great day. :D

Thanks,

Justin

P.S. I will try to get pictures up soon.

well i do know that a cold vehicle is bloody hard to start when the butterfly valve is open. your timing could very well be out if your backfiring outta the carb, but i think for better acceleration from 0-45 your possibly gonna need to do something about the accelerator pump (power valve?) i know that with my bored out 1 bbl, i really bogged in the lower RPM...actually about the same speed too, so i tightened my accelerator pump screw to get a shot o fuel in sooner, and that fixed er up fine...but i dont really know anything, i just like to pretend i do. I just go by what happens with my car stuff.

Yes, I am quite happy with the upgrades. I just need to do some more tweaking. At the beginning of this summer I knew nothing about carburetors or ignition. I did not even know how to time an engine. Somehow I managed to successfully install a new carburetor and an electronic ignition system. :?

i have learned so much from this board. now, instead of sitting on my music message boards, i sit here....

man, I am actullay using the internet for learning... Al Gore would be so proud

thedude, do you have an automatic? If so, have YOU found first yet?

Oh boy, that question made me laugh. :D Yes I do have an automatic. The reason why I laughed is because I am also confused on that subject. I have a 1968 C4 transmission with a 1965 shift selector. I do not know if they are the same as the '68's. I have manually shifted the transmission before starting in first gear (at the bottom). This gave me better acceleration than when I started at the white dot. In my 1965 owners manual it says that starting in the (o) drive will give the best acceleration. On the next nice day I will test it out.

Good laugh...that's what I thought too.

If you have a '68 C4 then I think the small white dot will start you out in first. Either way, you would notice when you start out in first. Believe me, big difference between the two.

Another think could be your carburetor jets. I had to replace my primary idle and secondary idle jets to eliminate some bogging on take off. Just an idea.

so you car looks complete to me...just simple things to fix...and paint

I'll bet that if we all made lists of our uncompleted projects in our stangs...yours is NO different...so you should just drive now. Not fix anything, not look at dollars to complete...just drive

If you DO have a '68 C4 the shift pattern should be normal (D-2-1), so if you have the shifter all the way down it should be in 1st. Although you do need to be going slow enough (below 15-20mpg depending on rear gear ratio) or stopped for that matter.

But I can say I had a little trouble with it letting me manually select 1st gear before I installed my shift kit...

Oh and Chaz, are our cars ever 'complete'? hehe :)

But I can say I had a little trouble with it letting me manually select 1st gear before I installed my shift kit...

That is worth another laugh. I figured my transmission was a 1965 C4. So I bought a shift kit for a 65-66 C4. After I removed the valve body (I had transmission fluid all over me at this point) I took it to my workshop (ok, it is really in the basement on the ping pong table with a tarp on the table) and disassembled the valve body. I then noticed that the separator plate did not match the plate in the directions. Great...I then notice that the date code on the upper valve body started with "C8", 1968...I found a little black ball among the small pools of transmission fluid. "What is this?" I said, "It could not be to the valve body, what would a little rubber ball have to do with a valve body?" I was soooo wrong. I reinstalled the valve body, put new transmission fluid in (I did not have enough so I had to go out and buy more), and started the car. Starts fine...Good. I put it in gear and nothing happened. Son of a bi...I removed the valve body again and disassembled it again. After asking some questions and doing some research I realized that the little ball I had ignored earlier was causing my problems. A little ball, smaller than mouse feces (bad analogy, sorry) was causing the problem! I reassembled the valve body again, reinstalled it again, and tried once more to put the transmission in gear. And once again, nothing happened. And do you know what I did next? I removed and disassembled the valve body again! With further reading I realized that there should be two checkballs. Somehow I found the other one (on the tarp where I first disassembled the valve body. I put the two balls in, reassembled the valve body, and tightened down the ID tag on one of the screws. For some reason, the ID tag on the valve body had an edge similar to a razor. Yes, you guessed it, I sliced the tip of my index finger on an upward slant. It almost fully cut off a good few centimeters of flesh. There was much of blood and much profanity. I had not reinstalled the valve body again (fortunately) and I discovered that the checkballs were in the wrong place. This time I only had to disassemble the valve body, I put the checkballs in the correct place, reinstalled the valve body, started the car, and my transmission worked! That is my horrible experience with valve bodies. I still have the 65-66 C4 Transgo shift kit. If anyone needs it email me so we may discuss it further.

I hate valve bodies,

Justin

I hate valve bodies,

That's a helluva story.... well at least you can be glad that it's a Ford and it's an aluminum valve body.. not a Gm T350 or 400 which is cast IRON... kinda fun to hold up with one hand and try to start a bolt with another

i have the pertronix wires, flamthrower 2 coil, autolite plugs, and redtop battery. good stuff. those are the only performance mods at the moment since my dang mechanic has taken 5 months for some basic overhaul stuff, frikin idiot. the petronix things really improved the response in the engine and shifting from the second gear has given me the best acceleration. i was on the revised FSPP site, geez its alot better. i saw that turbo setup and i think i might just give it a shot. i'm goin to get a loan around april so i'll have a good budget for some work. GL with your cars!
