Mystery problems (Multiple) Help.

Hi, I searched the forum a bit before posting this message. Here are the symptoms.

1. I noticed what I believe was an exhaust leak for about a month. It kept getting louder so I figured I better find it and fix it. However, before I could, it got really loud on my way to work. After work I went out to start my car, it turned over then began to run really rough and coughing black smoke. That's when I saw the exhaust coming out from the doughnut at the exhaust and manifold connection. I bought a new doughnut and bolts and repaired this problem (quite now). But.

2. Now the car still won't start properly and when it does it runs extremely rough and I noticed that the carb is spraying gas everywhere. It was doing it the night after work when I tried to start it as well. It wasn't as pronounced then, because, I had the air cleaner on it.

Up to this point other than the exhaust noise the car ran fine. It had a bit of a skip at cruise, but was fine under acceleration and idle. So, this is my situation. Can any one help.

My car is a 1966, Coupe, I6 (obviously), Autolite 1100 (Holley rebuilt 3 months ago), tuned up about 2 months ago with new wires, cap, rotor and plugs. I also have a pertronix ignition that's been on the car for a year. Thanks for the help. Stranded.

It is coming out of the inside top of the carb where the gas line goes into the carb. It looks like it is being sprayed into the carb under high pressure.

The carb is only 4 or 5 months old. It was a rebuild from Holley.
 
You may have a rusty fuel line between your filter and carb. A piece of rust could stop the needle valve from closing and then you will get gasoline overflowing the carb bowl and flood the engine.
 
Sounds like your needle valve is failing to shut off the fuel to the carb. Check the float. If it's plastic, replace with brass. Check the needle valve for debris or damage. :wink:
 
On a totally unrelated topic - I really like you wheels. Do you have better pics of them? Where did you get them?
 
Corellian, those wheels look like Shelby 10 spokes
try a copy of NPD, they usually have a pic of them
 
The rims are 4 lug. They came with the car. The center caps say western. That's about all I know on them.
 
Could the needle value fail that quickly. I did notice when I shut if off the first time it wigged out, that fuel was just dripping into the carb. The bowl looked very full as well. I did notice that after I put the new carb on the car it ran good for about 3 week, then is started sputtering again. I guess maybe this could be part of the problem. But, why would it just start doing this all the sudden? It ran fine in the morning before work, then it just crapped out 9 hours later sitting in the parking lot. :(.
 
Like 61Futura said, could it be that there is trash in the tank that is getting to the carb? I think mine is mucked up. I can never get more than 10 gals in a 12 gal tank. Just bought a 14 off ebay to allay my concerns, 150$ complete with sending unit, I'll have more capacity and peace of mind.
 
Does anyone know of a good mechanic in the Redmond/Everett Washington area?
 
Get yourself a good maintenance book, and check the carb out yourself. It really is quite simple. As previously stated, one problem could be your float. Some rebuilds don't replace them, and the plastic becomes porous, making the float soak up fuel. Even if the float is good, invest in a brass float. You can do it. :wink:

I've been reading the good advice here, and agree that you have trash coming out of your gastank.

You need to have TWO filters on your car for a solution! You should already have the one that screws into your carb. You'll need to add the second.

Look at where the fuel pump gets its fuel from the gas line near the steering gear. There is a length of rubber hose connecting the hard gas line and the fuel pump. Go to WalMart and buy a clear (actually kind of Yellow) see-through Fram filter with 1/4 inch ends (You Mustang guys correct this if a Mustang is bigger than a Falcon). While you're there, see if they have one that will screw into your carb. (You should pull the rubber hose at the carb and unscrew the filter from the carb and take it to WalMart with you)

Cut your rubber fuel hose about two to three inches away from the fuel pump - or about 1/2 way on the rubber gas hose. Insert the Fram fuel filter. Make sure the "flow" arrow is pointed the right way.

You need to have this filter between the tank and the fuel pump to catch the big stuff before it gets to the fuel pump. Without it, you'll be ruining the fuel pump in short order. The filter on the carb can then catch the little stuff.

PS you realy don't need a shop for this fix. It takes a screw driver, a pliers, and a wire cutter (to cut the rubber gas line) and some grunting.

I live in Kirkland, WA actually so we're probably close.

Best place nearby is Bel-Kirk mustang. Use them a lot and really happy with their service. The owner, Ron, has an award-winning I6 even though his mechanics give him a hard time, they are super familiar with these cars. Charge book rates for labor, too, so you always know what you're going to pay.
 
I've used Bel-Kirk Mustang. They did the install of the new carb. Had trouble three week later and they couldn't fix it. Guess I'll give them another try.

As for fixing the carb. I'd love too, but don't feel confident I will get it right. I have another carb in the garage I think I'll try rebuilding for kicks and practice. Hopefully, I can get this monster running right. Would you all recommend a tank and line replacement?
