Need help on Stovebolt Carb

I need some help on hooking up the Stovebolt 5200 carb. I bought a Haynes Holley carb book, but the book didn't have my carb in it. It briefly mentioned it was a Weber design and didn't show anything for that carb. Go figure. Anyways that book said it wasn't a 5200, but more like a 6201? Anyways, how do I hook it up and where does each line go to which part of the carb?

Andrew

Andrew, do you have the Haynes Holley Carb Manual #10225

if so go to chapter 7 Part E... the pages that follow are about rebuilding the 5200 and give some detlaied shots of the carb being rebuilt... you can see the major connections there...

but here are a couple of shots of Mustangaroo's old 5200 on a 2v...

the major connections are simple...
Fuel line on the top coming off oposite the throttle linkage.
the throttle linkage will have to be worked to your setup.
the vacume port is on the bottom next to the idle mixture screw.. mine does not have a post there you may have to install one....

that is it... of course run whatever style choke you have... I pulled the water choke mine had and installed a manual... the one in the pictures has an electric... run that to 12v source from the ignition switch... not the coil...

thanks alot, but i'm still alittle confused or better yet need more info. I did purchase the book and returned it because everywhere I looked I couldn't find much if anything on that carb. Anyways, i can't regret that now. Here's what i know so far:

I have a electronic assisted choke, ignition selanoid thingy (near the throtle linkage which I plan to remove), and no clue what goes where but the pics help. Steve told me to buy a 68+ dizzy because of the dual advance. Where do the lines for both advances go to the carb and how does that play a role in the carbs ability to function? And no I'm not dogging on you Steve.

Is it possible to have a manual choke with electronic assist?

Curious, yes lost and curious
Andrew

Well I would run the electric choke... putting in the manual was not hard, but it took some thinking... in addition to pulling the electric choke you have to block a vacume passage and install the manual parts... there is not direct kit for the 5200 I had to buy a generic manual kit from NAPA... I can post some pictures tonight of the one I installed.

as for the dual dizzy... if I remember correctly... the line on top of the canister runs to full manifold vacume and the line off the can runs to the ported source on the base of the carb.

Fuel, throttle, and choke are the same.

I've done some more looking on my carb and it looks like I have a fuel return next to the fuel filter. How do go and blocking that off? Also I took my water-choke cap off and I assume I can go get a black cap to cover up the choke. I did notice from the picture and mine that my wire is on the opposite side of the choke with a computer connection. I need to take some pics but no digital camera. Poo.

Andrew

I went to Autozoo and Advance and they don't have a choke cap for my 5200. Where do I go to get one?

Andrew

I'm not trying to be an @$$ or demanding but I really need to solve these problems. Here what I got:

carbnumbers.jpg

1. This brown/white wire. This should be the electric choke assist wire. I'm guessing a 12v source, probably on the alternator?

2. One of the two vacumm lines I assume. What vacuum line runs to this nipple?

3. The other vacuum line. I am assuming that this one runs to dizzy off the can of the dual advance?

4. I know this is a water-valved choke with electric assist. I took the water-valve off. Where do I get the black cap for the electric choke (like on Mustangroos) or do I have to totally switch to a manual choke?

5. I am assuming this is a fuel return. How do I block it off? Do I use a rubber nipple cover or do I have to take the nozel off?

I hope I'm not being a pain in the butt. I need to get my stang running and out of the way, at least in four weeks. After that I'll be taking classes and working all the time and no time or money toward the mustang. I have little money left, so I need to get the parts fast. Please guys, I need the help and info here.

It has been quiet here lately. I have two of the 5200's. Unfortunately neither of them looks like yours. I think you are correct regarding the distributor port and the bigger one looks almost like a pcv port, does it run into the base, maybe since it's blocked off you can ignore it. The fuel return line I don't get at all. I wouldn't have posted as I am no help but I did want you to know someone was reading yours. I'm sure you'll get some answers soon.

don

ps. have you seen this http://www.surpluselectron.com/aaron/holley.htm

Thanks Okefenokee Comet. I just wonder if I got gimped on the carb. Is this another mystery carb. God I hope not.

Andrew

No it's the right carb.

1. You are correct. Don't quote me on this yet but that should go to the S term on the alt. I'll look at lunch and post a definite answer for this then.

2. You want the single vacuum advance that comes on 68 and later cars. This port is used for the vacuum advance.

3. I cant quite make this out in the picture so again, at lunch I'lll look at mine. I think I have it blocked off though.

4. Run your heater hose through it, it works fine. Looks cruddy but works fine. If the electric choke fails this works as a back up.

5. I dont have this on mine. Because it is on the air horn I think it is a bowl vent for vapors. I'll double check mine at lunch.

Its a great little carb once you get it on. Talk to you later!!

Yup, #3 is plugged as well as #5. The wire goes to the s terminal so that it onle has juice when the engine is running. Hope this helps!

Ron

Thanks Ronbo. That's helps out alittle. I'm going to give a call to Tom at Stovebolt and see whats up with this carb. Seems hardly anybody knows what to do. I've looked at setups trying to figure out what goes where, but the picture always seems to be cut off. Oh well. If anybody else can point me in the right direction. I would appreciate it.

Andrew

Well Tom got a chipped tooth so I coudn't get in contact with him all day. I also dug through some posts a found a little info but it also has set in some confusion. The posts states the on a dual dizzy, the vacuum on the can should be hooked up to a full vacuum source and to do nothing with the vacuum closest the dizzy. Well that is totally backwards to what Jimbo said. I'm getting so frustrated over this carb that I'm about to put my Autolite 1100 on and put that holley back in the box until I can figure this whole carb setup out. I don't want to use the Autolite 1100, but if thats what it takes to get my Mustang running. :bang: :bang: :bang: :bang: :bang: :bang: :bang: :bang: :bang: :bang: :bang: :bang: :bang:

I just need to cool off. No, I need a vacation. I should be able to take more pics of my carb tonite to show my problems.

Go get a 68 or later distributor and your problems are solved. I guess I'm not catching all the trouble your having?

I've got the 68 distributor, fuel line, got the right vacuum off the carb. Now that is settled, its onto the choke. I don't want to use the water-valve choke so I either want to go all electric or manual. I'm having a hardtime finding an electric choke. Anybody got ideas? If not, I'm going manual.

Andrew

I never found an electric available anywhere for the 5200, but I sent you info on the manual...

J.

Whew....I looked for an electric choke also....it came down to cruising boneyards looking for one then I gave up. If you loosen the bolt on the cap you can rotate the housing to get a better fit with the hoses. No matter what you do it looks pretty ugly. Hey try e-bay and see if you can find a junk one for cheap with electric choke. Pull the choke from that one and put the rest on a shelf for a rainy day. Just trying to throw some ideas at ya :P Good luck!

Ron

Ok, I got everything taken care of. I just had a bad day yesterday and it didn't seem t get any better. I know where all the lines go and installed the manual choke. All I've got left is wiring the choke and coolant lines and I'll be firing this baby up since it broke down since May. Thanks everyone!

Andrew

Glad to hear it....

sometimes things can look frustrating and all, once you get it running all will be right and peachy!
