Need more carb help

I cleaned and rebuilt the carb on my 144, and it runs great, except for one thing. It has a bad bog when the gas is whacked open, like it's not getting enough accelerator pump shot. My question is, how do I adjust the accelerator pump to give a larger squirt? It runs fine all the way up through the rpms if the throttle is applied slowly, but it bogs and cuts out under normal driving conditions for me. I'm not being hard on it, but I'm not out for a Fred and Ethel sunday drive either. I know on a 4bbl holley it's a matter of a larger squirter, but on the 1bbl I have no idea. Thanks for any help guys.

Any chance that you have a picture of your carburator? That way we can see which model carb you are working with. On most carbs the accelator pump has different locations on either the fulcrum or the bellcrank so that it can move more or less fuel depending on elevation..

I was thinking the same thing as Ron. Post a pic -especially of the accerator pump area. I was having a similar problem with a 2 bbl and changed the pivot point and saw a noticeable difference.

There is sometimes a u-shaped bend in the accelerator linkage.
Squeezing it a bit tighter will increase the pump shot.

Whoops, forgot to mention that it is a '63 144, with the stock autolite carb.

The linkage has a dog leg in it, 90* left a bit then 90* right, if that is what you mean Jackfish. I'll see what adjusting that does for the throttle response.

Howdy Kid and all:

Most likely is your accelerator pump is not working, or not working correctly. Check that out first before bending and links. It could be weak, or plugged, or ???? Check it out first.

Next check and verify that your engine has enough initial advance.

Adios, David

I rebuilt it before installation, which is why I installed it. It seems to be working better today, especially after putting some fresh gas in the tank. I haven't tried changing the bend yet, but I bet that is the majority of the problem.

Most of the trouble is getting the car rolling. The clutch grabs right off the floor because the PO adjusted it incorrectly, which combined with the carb sputter means it took some practice to not stall it. Otherwise the car runs great.
