Need Timing Help

My ignition timing is getting progressively worse and I have a very severe backfire. I know I need to fix it but what I can't remember is if I should advance or retard the timing and which way I move the dizzy to do such.

Also, I think my LOM dizzy is on its last leg, is there a way to check for certain?

I have a few 1100's manual trans or auto?

I like numbers  when you say your timing gets worse, can you list the numbers?

backfirfiring can also be caused by a A/F problem
(vacuum leak or very rich)

Manual trans.

I don't have numbers but I know I'm running rich but I've been running rich and it hasn't been this bad.

Twist it counter clockwise to advance; clockwise to retard. If you don't want to get a timing light, use a vacuum gauge and adjust the timing to maximum vacuum. At all odds, it should be at least 18". That will get you very close to spec.

From there, you can fine tune with a meter and a timing light. If you get good timing from the vacuum, then you can determine how far off the outer ring of the balancer is and compensate when you set the timing by a dwell tach.

Rich mixture is another issue for the carb dudes.
