I was refered to this sight because they said someone OR many someones knows every thing about Aussie Ford engines...well this sad story goes like this--I purchased a 75 toyota landcruiser from Australia. when I got it,it had a88 or 89 Australian Ford 6 cyl efi petrol engine. the efi and distributor are Bosch --I drove it home from Colorado and went out the next day to go and it wouldnt start. I checked everything my limited knowledge allowed--then got a friend with more knowledge and we determined that we werent getting any spark -to the plugs or the coil. we figured it might be the distributor- so we went to NAPA and got a (NO AUSTRALIAN PARTS ALLOWED) joke-they couldn't find anything to match the numbers on the distributor--could someone please tell me what the problem might be or where I might obtain these special parts!!!!! I Thank You all in advance JD

addo the coil is fine--we tried another coil which we knew worked and got nothing!!!

The problem is that you refer to the motor in generalities and it may be OHC, may be pushrod. May even be very early EFI.

The distributor code is necessary and then the module can be identified and sourced.

since this engine ,as I was told came out of an 88 or 89 Falcon I believe its pushrod.

Does it look like this?

not sure what that is!!! the 3 sets of numbers on the distributor are
9230065601-----next line is U-TH6------ bottom line is 84DA12100EA thats it . ITs made by Bosch as is the Fuel Injection hope that helps

That's a 1984 design year distributor for an "XE" series Falcon. It has a little box off the side of the dizzy, lid held down with two philips head screws. Under that cover is a flat hexagonal shaped module with four spade lugs. The module is common to all Bosch electronic distributors made here from about '82 though '88. It's about $75 new for the genuine article. I suggest buy one new, and one used, as a spare.

The two thin leads plugged to this module come from the pickup coil. Test this for continuity by disconnecting one from the module. Occasionally they blow. Also check the red and green wires that (should) leave the module and go to the coil, for continuity. Depending upon the EFI conversion, this may not be hooked up as described.

When the new module is installed, the base MUST be fitted with a dab of silicone heatsink grease. Make sure the ground is good to your dizzy, and alternator output within spec.

Am I on track now?

Cheers, Adam.

I can't see the dizzy real clear but mine has a grey module at the bottom that says mortorcraft on it. and I check all of this when I get home tonight. Can I get these parts around here or is Australia the only sorce??

Australia should be quicker. If you're close to a major city, figure on five calendar days.

I was told just now that a place called All Ford Wreckers in clontarf, Queensland might be the best place to obtain parts for this engine...JD

If it's just Bosch electronic gear, buy it new. You don't need a wrecker for that. Try these people:

https://www.americanautos.com.au/secure.html

They are reliable and I personally can recommend them for honest service to orders. They will be open in about seven hours from this posting date. Call, don't email when you have your part number/details to hand. It's only $1.50 or so to get an instant answer...

Cheers, Adam.

one last question for now where or how do I find this distributor code??? I sent the only 3 sets of numbers on the thing, sooo where else... also the picture of the dizzy on your new thred is not like mine at least what I can see of it mine must be newer,,, till later JD

If it has a rectangle grey module that sticks of the side of the dissy(not under a steel cover) its the other type that requires a computor black box to run.Im sure these types of modules are of various types of Ford and should be available in the States. Its hard to see in Addos efi engine photo but it looks like the type that has the grey stick module.See Addos new topic ,that picture is the standard Bosch electronic that dosent require the black box .

The distributor that you see on my engine in the picture above used a common TFI module. Just ask for one for a mid eighties Mustang, Escort, Tempo....etc. You'll need a special wrench to remove it properly.

JDR, I'm no tech head but I had one of these when they were new and can share two insights which may be compatible with what the others are telling you.

1.I had to replace a head gasket on an 84EFI and when I tried to start the car it would simply not fire. It took us an hour to figure out that we had to reconnect the air intake hose and voila immediate go.

2. I had the car towed away to a Ford dealer because the plug to the engine control unit located remotely from the motor had wiggled loose.
In relation to the 2nd problem it took a roadside mtce guy an hour to figure it out.

Sometimes we look for the complex answers when the simple problems are the cause.

Just another simple idea. Have you checked to see whether the distibutor shaft actaully spins when the engine is winding over.

Ford sixes have a tendancy to wear out the drive gear on the distrubtor shaft. Most spare parts stores in Aus keep the aftermarket Crow hardened dizzy gears on the shelf because this is such a common problem.
