Newbie, Engine Swap

Hi everyone,
About 2 weeks ago I bought a 1965 Mustang 200cid for a guy who was selling it because his daughter wanted a sportier car....a PT Cruiser. But hey better her loss my gain javascript:emoticon('')
Twisted Evil So the engine is pretty much stock minus a solid state ignition (electronic ignition). I dont know if it is the stock motor but it would be nice to know how to find out.

Now my friend is swapping a stock 250 out of his early 70's Mav. for a 302 and offered me the engine. What I want to know is what difference would the engine have for my car? And how much would i have to change out in order for it to work ie. Motor Mounts, exhaust, etc. Also, he was saying that I could possibly put a stroker kit on the 250. I use my Mustang as my daily driver and want to keep the car economical. I would like a little more power while keeping the car economical.

Do you guys think I should swap the 200 for the 250 or just rebuild my engine??

Thank You,
Cory

either way, keep the 250 if he is giving it away, you can always work on a "power" motor with it while you drive the 200 around..

can you say FSPP aluminium head?

there r no stoker kits out for any of the inline 6's mainly because of how close the rods get to the crank but with a 250 u can put the 200 internalys into it and destroke it to a 221

and i agree get the 250 and hold on to it u never know when u may want to build a hipo motor

Whoa, what a concept 8)
Has this been discussed here much?

250 and 200 share the same bore.

200 crank in a 250 block makes a 200 with appalling deck height. 170 crank in a 200 block makes a 188.

Maybe that's where the confusion came in? I believe you could just squeak a 221 crank into a 200.

Since the 200 is in it already, and there is so much aftermarket available for it, just build that. the difference in the two is minimal and much harder to fabricate the 250 into the car.

Thank You everyone for your answers. One more question though.

My spark plugs are getting a substantial amount of oil on them and i was told that it could be the piston rings. I just want to know what I should do whether a whole rebuild or just the rings. If so what type and where should I get them from?

Thanks Everyone,
Cory

A lot of parts are interchangeable, but you'll have to swap the transmission if you want to go with the 250. The 250 has a SB bell housing pattern. There's a lot of infomation on the differences and similarities of the two motors on this forum. Do some research by searching old posts and get the Falcon Performance Handbook.

I agree with the other fellows; get that motor as a potential upgrade. At least get the cylinder head; it's a direct bolt-on and I'm almost certain that it has bigger valves and slightly larger carburetor. All that info is in the Falcon Handbook. This is a great forum with a ton of knowledge and great bunch of people. I've learned so much here that I've change my plans (written in stone at the time) for my car several times especially as new parts from FSPP keep coming out for the 200!

Take care,

I am also considering switching to a 250 although in a 68 stang. i think with the new cyl head that mike is working on it will make a difference in the end.
I am also changing to a T5 tranny and am looking to build a torque monster. (i just live in a small town and not much hwy driving if any)

KEEP THE 250!!

My spark plugs are getting a substantial amount of oil on them and i was told that it could be the piston rings.

That could just be valve seals. May have scared off the previous owner but it's a cheap thing to fix.

Last time I had a car that needed them done was a while back so didn't try it myself. Check for other posts on doing the job. But if you're not up for it don't worry it shouldn't be tough on the wallet.
