Hello All,
This is my first post to any Forum, though I have read through many in the past. This seems like a great site, I am very excited that I found it.
I have a 66 Fastback, that my dad bought new and I have been driving daily since '83. I have an 2 issues I can not seem to resolve.
1st. a leaky carb. I have replaced the carb 2 times, the last one from pony carb about 2 years ago, now it is leaking (flooding?) too. Any ideas on what might cause this?
2nd Is timing problems, I believe from reading through the other posts here that I have a spun balancer, which is why my timing light seems to indicate such odd readings, my question is do I have to replace it or can I just remark it?
I will appreciate any thoughts. I look forward to being a member of this forum.

1) balancer...replace. It could be a wobbly distributor though....
2) carb...is it leaking air or gas? rebuild it yourself!

Damn I am jealous. I want a fastback!!!

the float may be too high on the carb, which would cause it to leak or flood, so maybe lower the float...
 
Wow,
now thats fast replies, I will check the float level.
I was hoping not to have to replace the balancer, but if it will help the drivablity I will do it.
also I will post some pictures this evening when I figure out how :).

A couple of other things to look at are.
If it has backfired maybe the power valve has blown out cause it to flood. to check run motor with air filter off, turn motor off and watch for gas to be dripping inside the carb.
Also a stuck needle and seat, try tapping on the carb where the gas goes into the carb. (TAP NOT HIT) if it is stuck some times this well free it up..
Don't know it you know much about carbs but could the air/fuel mixture adjustment be out causeing it to run rich.
Timming, have the points been addjusted lately, they can cause the timming to move as they ware. a moveing point gap will change timming. Another thing could be the timming chain may be wore out.
Just some other stuff to look at.

First, welcome

2nd, I'd try remarking the balancer first. Determine TDC and mark it on the balancer. See if the timing stays stable.

WHen you say carb is leaking, is it leaking fuel? Inside, outside? or is it a vacuum leak?

yeah, I prolly jumpe dthe gun saying replace the balancer...but it's
1) easy
2) cheap
3) preventative
 
I concur with Chaz. Might as well replace the dampener. And it could be a worn out distributor if you get erratic timing. My old Harley was had a worn distributor and I could set the points and timing and a few miles down the road it would start backfiring etc. I would recheck points & timing to find that they were not where I had just set them at.

might I suggest you install a pertronix system...either I or II

never worry about your points again....REALLY helps with the timming issues by providing a stabil environment
 
If you keep going through carburetors, you may have a rusty fuel line between your fuel filter and carburetor. Some have a secondary filter that screws right to the carb, mine doesn't. I had to tear my carb apart several times until I wised up about what was happening. I'm using a rubber fuel line for now, from the pump to the carb. By the way, when taking apart the carb and you plan on reusing the gaskets, don't let the cork gaskets dry out. They shrink.

Thanks for the help, I took the carb of the car last night to adjust the float, it did seem that the bowl was a tad full, almost to the very top. I also discovered WATER in my fuel, 3 big ol' water bubbles sitting in the bottom of the bowl. Could this explain why the car seemed to 'misfire' occassionally while cruising around 45-55?
A little more history may help, the engine is a 2 year old Reman from Autozone, all other engine components(except the balancer) are just as new, no performance upgrades YET. I have been engaged in a constant battle for the past year to get the timing right, or at least what I thought was a timing issue. With the knowledge gained from this sight about the spun balancer and the discovery of the water I may be on the path of victory. I have adjusted the timing hundreds of times, small adjustments until the car would idle and accelerate with no pinging, but cruising at a constant speed of 45-55+ the engine would seem to miss or sputter just enough to be annoying.
Today I am going to remark the balancer as suggested in other post here, and then recheck the timing. also open the carb up again and see if there is water in there again, if so,
what can I do about the water? drop and drain the tank?
One more question for now, what additive is recommended for driving with unleaded fuel and is it necessary?

At this point, most heads have been rebuilt, especially if you bought an engine with a rebuilt head. Most rebuilds already include hardened valve seats on the exhaust valves. The means you really don't need additives. I've never used any additives, just run higher octane if I was worried about it.

Water in the tank? Yup, run it as low as possible, and then drain it. Then purge your fuel lines.

Also, pure ethanol is miscible 1:1 with water, so you can add some of this (a gallon, tops for one time) to a tank run empty and fill up with premium on top. The water will be incorporated and passed through the motor.

8) the water in the fuel is likely what is causing your miss at cruise speed, considering how much you have found. to eliminate the water, dump in about a gallon of alcohol, perhaps even two, and run the tank near empty, then fill up at a different station as sometimes some of the cheaper places may have water in their tanks. re: the balancer, remarking it to figure out if the balancer is slipping is fine, but if you find it is slipping, and likely it is, then replacement is needed. as for adding the pertronix, go for it. it is a reliable and virtually maintenance free way to upgrade your ignition system.
 
Well all, another day and the stang is still standing still.
I did mark TDC on the balancer, it seemed to be about 3 inches off the original notch. I will see if it continues to move. eitherway, a new balancer and pertronix is the next on the list for purchase.

next, rechecked the carb for water and replaced the gasket. Well no water yet, also I siphoned about 3 gallons out of the tank no water there either, I am sure theres water in the tank though, so I may just pull it and purge it, not to hip on alcohol, just a scaredy cat I guess.
I had to buy a rebuild kit for the carb to get the gasket, which I thought would be good cause I was able to get a gauge to measure the float level, still not sure its accurate though, specs say 1-3/64" but that was right in the middle of my float, so that did not really help at all.
Anyway, now my carb SPITS fuel out of the drivers side between the top of the carb and the bowl, only when I accelerate though not at idle. tomorrows another day I will fight it again.
I am seriously considering purchasing the Clifford 2b adapter kit, its kinda pricy but if it will help it might be worth it. any thoughts?
 
I have a question before a purchase.
I have stopped the majority of the fuel leak at the carb.
there is still some small, occasional drips coming from around the fuel filter, and slight seepish (sp), around the carb. I have tightened everything twice, put teflon tape around fuel filter threads, and retightened,but still got the drips.

Could the fuel pump be out of whack? too much pressure maybe.

i have the same leakage. seems to be one of those inherant carb things...

I clean it off every so often and keep going...?!?!?!
 
decision for a new balancer is made, any suggestions on where to get a GOOD one?
Also, I am going to replace the fuel sending unit, fuel pump while the car is down.
Also going to put in the pertronix system, is the PII worth the extra coin?

hope I can get the parts quickly, while the weather is nice.

any suggestions will be most appreciated.
