Noob question about the little 6's

Hi all, i am looking to restore a 55 fairlane. I don't want the 272 however because of the poor gas mileage and hard to find parts. I'd like to put a 223 or even a 200 inline 6 in. I have a 78 f150 with a 300 so i love the inlines... My question is where can i get one of these bad boys and how difficult is it to find parts for these?

I'm not looking for an overbored hopped up engine i just want the stock bare bone. Let me know what you think and thanks in advance.

I would suggest a 250 just because you have the space, and are going to have to fabricate mounts anyways.

As far as where to get them, junkyards across america have them in piles. For a 250, something like a 70's Maverick, Granada, monarch, early (not II) mustang, etc.

A rebuilt fairly stock 250 w/ maybe a slightly bigger cam and a 2bbl upgrade would make a pretty good cruiser motor for a classic ride.

My next project is going to be a 28-29 A sedan w/ 250.

8) find a 300 to swap in you fairlane. the 200 will be a bit small and way underpowered. the 300 however will have the torque curve you need for that car.

I agree, a 200 would be underpowered, and you wouldn't gain that much in mileage since it'd be working its heart out much of the time.

I'd think a decent 250 would work well, or even a 300 with taller gearing or taller tires.

What the heck...go for broke! Pull a 4.9L fuel-injected inline six from a mid-90's F150. Good power, good reliability, good fuel economy...

Alright, I'm gonna be the jackass here and tell you the truth. Keep that 272! In fact, put a 312 in there! TRUST ME! Not only will you LOVE the Y-Block (it's my favorite engine class by far), but it's reliable as all hell, and doesn't actually get that horrible of gas mileage. My 272/2bbl/3 on the tree with mechanical OD gets pretty good mileage.

Sorry guys!

My two cents, keep the Y-block, if you get it tuned right, keep your foot out of it, that engine will keep ticking and get decent mileage too! My uncle's '56 ford was getting 20 mpg with the 312 he had in it... don't know what the 312 was out of, but he just used it to go to town every once in a while... great little truck, too bad he sold it.

Add a gear vendor unit if possible, will help the mileage and give you more choices for gears when you want to play a little.

I like my six car for the mileage, but if possible like to keep original style engine in all my rigs, even the 302 powered 68 'stang that we show!

2k for a GV will buy a LOT of gasoline...
