Offy 3 X 1 Running very poorly

My latest hairbrained idea to mate Offy adapter to log!

006-Topic%20O%20rings%20%20256x192.JPG

I never have been noted for my patience, so while I'm sitting on my duff waiting for the mailed check to get to LA and Offy to send the new o rings, I thought I would try a different approach. I've done an impression of the o ring grove using a product called Quick Steel Epoxy Putty. Package indicates that it can be used for gas tanks, mufflers, and intakes and various other applications, but I've listed only the ones I felt applied to this project. Heat, fuel tank and specifically "intake repairs" . I used a combination of several ideas I got from you guys starting with overlaying the grove with Saran Wrap. I pressed the putty into the grove, then built up the front and rear edges where I know the adapter and o rings don't mate with the log. I then transfered the whole mess to the log, centered the best I could over hole on the log and then with Saran wrap still in place, put adapter back on and bolted adapter down. Due to working time of putty, I had to do one at a time. The result pictured is the completion of the second one. I'm practicing the ancient art of keeping my fingers crossed as the impressions look pretty fair. I have trimmed back the inside edges so I can back fill the joint between the two once I bolt it down and trimmed away som of the excess on the outside edges so it does not protrude from under the adapter. I'm not sure at to whether to use blue goo or the black goo to seat the adapter on it, but since I got several hours of cure time ahead of me before I can work it, I'm hoping someone will advise me as to what is the best gasket sealer to use. I will let everyone know if this hairbrained idea works or not. Again I want to pass on my Thanks for all the help and incouragement that has been passed my way.

...looks like you are running three SCV carbs and your signature says you have a DS2 distibutor... So you are having a vaccuum advance mismatch just like anyone running a single carb would, unless you are usig manifold vaccuum, which is in itself more problematic because you will have less manifold vaccuum than someone running a single carb....

Ideally your center 1100 would be a non-SCV type and your vaccuum advance would be coming from it.

The brass fittings comming off the intake log just below the center carb is what I used to create a manifold to split the vac to the distributor, PCV and the vac modulator for the C4 automatic. What year(s) would I look for to get an non SCV 1100 carb.

I'm definately not sure about this but sharing a vacuum port with the PCV doesn't sound like it would work too well since that's just a vent. You lose vacuum to the distributor every time the vent opens.

Used a varation of Jett's_Pony advice. Used JBWeld to block the holes on both sides of the SCV valve, including those in the carb itself, and filled in the area on the back of the valve to freeze the spring in the closed position. Redid the brass vac manifold and moved the advance line back to the carb. I will continue to look for a non non SCV carb.

Sorry for the delay, we were out of town.
Your impressions look pretty good. I can see why the early style adapter would give a problem. The flat log style is easier since it is a flat mating surface.
We used a spring from a bunch of springs that I got a while ago from the local home improvement store that happened to fit over the end of the valve prior to screwing it back in to hold the valve closed. I bought one of those generic boxes full of all kinds of springs. If you want one send me your address and I will put one in the mail. You could probably stick a piece of wood in there to just stop it from operating. I really wanted to use the stock vacuum advance port, that is why I just disabled the Load-o-matic (SCV) valve. Seems to be working ok. By plugging all the holes you may be blocking any vacuum from getting to the distributor.
I actually used a grey high temp silicone sealer to make a spacer and seal up the center carb port since the later heads do not fit the Offy manifold adapter quite right. When the outer carb holes fit right there is still a gap on the center carb. We made an adapter out of aluminum and sealed it up with the grey high temp silicone. So far no problems.
The best silicone sealer I ever used was the Chrysler black silicone, not sure if it is still available, it worked on everything.
California carbs were non scv in "66 and "67 they are kind of hard to find and are the smaller carb, that is why we went with the 66 240 truck carb.
The advice on the uni syn sound pretty good.
Hopes this helps

Hey
Put the pcv valve hose vent to one of the carb air cleaners. Think of it as a giant vacuum leak. We have the transmission fed from the manifold only. The common feed gave us a problem.

Please don't worry about any delay on any response, I'm just grateful for the help on sorting out the running problems. The problem with a common feed makes sense, the current problem is that there isn't enough space on the louverd type breather flang to run the pvc hose.

I did bench check to see if there was flow through the vac line after pluging all the holes in the SCV and jb welding the spring closed and I do have flow

I want the 3-1 set up on my 250/C4 Maverick. What are the best carb combinations? Does it matter if I use the Offy or fab the log?

If I had to do it again, I would use the direct mount method and as a second choice, the later flat log head. Building your own progressive linkage for a direct mount woud be the big drawback to the direct mounting idea, but I have seen others do it.

:D Many years ago I purchased a vacuum equalizer tool from JCWhitney Co.It worked very well. And good quality.Don`t know if they still carry that item,or if the quality is still good.Might give it a look.Keep a close watch on it,though.Mine grew legs and walked off.Hehehe.

The Bug Pack is the one I have, it works fine.

Looking at the way the Offy manifold attaches to the early head I would go with a later flat log head and the later style manifold adapter. It worked well even though all I had was a grinder and flat file to do the machine work to fit the manifold.
