Yeah, getting the progressive synchronization to work reliably is part of the Offy 3X1 fun. I play with the angle of the linkage arms, spring tensions, carb linkage bending' and a few other variables to get that "kick in the pants" reaction when all 3 barrels are WOT.
I'm using a cable throttle to pull the center carb linkage and the outer carbs are "slaves" off the center linkage. This allows for center carb to go from idle to WOT reliably but I have issues with getting the outer carbs returning to fully closed at idle if I adjust for reliable WOT on the outers.
The choice of carbs affects the setup also. The idle stability of my setup is strongly influenced by the small vacuum leaks of the throttle shafts and plate settling. I experimented with different carb setups and found some common problems and carb specific problems. I have taken to testing and verifying a carb will work well
as a single on my mild '63/170 wagon before I try to use it on the Offy tri-power 250 Comet.
I experimented with YF's, 1100's, 1904's and even 2Bbl Holleys and Holley/Webers trying to get the golden setup. Currently I'm using three Holley 1904's (actually one is a 1908 [?]) selected from parts of the batch I picked up from various places and tested on the stock 170 (1Bbl) engine.
Here's a few pics of various attempts:
Current running great:
Center carb cable linkage and "slave" offy progressive:
Good looking but un workable Clifford modified 1904's:
2Bbl Holley 7448 / 1904 & 1100 ( ran good but not stable)
