i am gonna shoot my engine dynoist.....    :x :x :x

today was to be the final tuning session for the mighty sohc i6.

last week we were carring out final tuning and power runs,, in that session, we discovered that the injectors were maxxing out (read 99% duty cycle) and that the pump wasnt supply enuf juice either. so i said hold off i'll get an extra 1000hp fuel pump 2 large fuel filters and a good suge tank.

he said "rightio no worries see you next week"

i rocked up sat morning, gave him a hand installing all this stuff,

this morning he had a crack at tuning it, at first the fuel mixtures were bloody rich (8.6 to1) which fouled the plugs, new set of plugs went in.

then the tune started... 5500rpm reading 48% on injectors duty cycle with 32psi on board making 753hp.

5800rpm- my self imposed rev limit. 51% duty cylce 767hp.

the engine was design to rev to 6100rpm with 35psi on board.

he called told me the excelent news he said he reckon it can go to 6100 easily and support the 35 psi, he said do you want to try it and see if we can crack the 800hp barreir? i said... after alot of umming and arring OK... big mistake.

the tuner fellow done his adjustments of reseting the rev limiter but didnt raise boost pressure (stayed at 32) then gave it a power run.

throttle snapped open, engine reved cleanly right up to 6000 then started to lean,, so he re-adjusted maps and base fuel pressure. he said it make 782hp.

i asked is the motor being stressed with this he said with a resounding voice... no.

so i gave him permission to do it again,

not half an hour later..... he called me and spoke very quietly,, i knew something went wrong. he started to stutter and beat round the bush. i told him to get on with it and tell me.

he said ans i quote

" well,..... the dyno screen is reading 42psi rpm 6700rpm and ur power figure is 912hp........but the block now has 2 gapping holes in the side"

i cut him off and said in a fit of rage, charlie..... throw it away, THROW THE BOTTOM END AWAY DELETE THAT DYNO GRAPH AND I DONT WANNA HEAR ANY MORE ABOUT IT".

at that point i hung up the phone. furious!!!.

i calmed down and went round and seen him.

he was extremely sorry, he told me his wife spilt hot coffee on him as it was reaching the end of the rev range, and then after that he dosnt realy recall what happened except that he heard 2 loud bangs.

so now i have to get another bottom end and re-start it all again.

i was hoping to have the car readyfor christmas but alas that will not happen.

i will not be taking any action against charlie, though, as he has done all my dyno time for free and has offered to do all my dyno time in the future for free as well. which far outweights the bottom end cost anyways (3k).

i dont realy blame him anymore, but i am still very annoyed BUT THEN AGAIN 912hp is fudgen unbeleivable, and now i am more pissed that i told charlie to delete the graph then i am about my bottom end!!! lmfao.

f**k i am a dumb sob, i should of been happy with 767hp as the original goal was 740hp.

aw well shit really does happen.

cheers.joe.

Damn! :D  :D Sorry to hear about that, but I'm sure you'll bounce right back, well not right away(  )but, you'll bounce back nonetheless :) :) . Excellent work buy the way,Hmmmnn. 900---Plus Horsepower   .......Amazing! You should be proud! OO6.

Only 900? No wonder you're annoyed. Free dyno time will be great - you can subcontract all your mates' cars and get your 3 grand back.

Who cares! You are now a dyno legend. With your charisma, youre going to do what new XR6 Turbo punters can't do....afford to get another block and have another crack at it.

You need to contact StreetMachine, and get 'em on board. There is too much at stake.

You have no idea how much you have pushed the power barrier. Think of how much you've saved on going EA?

I'm not being smart. You need investment capital, and we want pictures of an anahalated block on the web! Addo showed the holed no 6 of a cross-flow 250, you need to share the wealth.

People will line up to pay to see a Ford six hauling a$$. You need to set the internet to work.

Your a blQQdy legend! Don't worry, you've got a building block. All the periferals are there.

PM 54Ford, and ask him for a game plan. He's been there, wrecked that!

mate its already started again,

i had a ef block ,crank and rods, delivered to my machinist, its copping a 43 thou over bore, with 60 thou over ea psitons, the cranks been nitrated,

crank girdle is to be made by me shortly,

au mains caps are being used with au mains studs installed,
mitsubishi 4g63 arp rod bolts are also being installed. rods are copping a shot peening.

the whole bottom end will be blue printed and balanced, and i will see if i can lighten the crank and the whole rotating mass a bit to aid spool time

the cylinder head is being thown back onto the flow bench to see if we can get more hp flow outa it. and a more agressive camshaft is now orderd as well, i expect to be back on the engine dyno in 4 weeks.

hopefully with a 900hp i6

dont worry i am now actually seeing this mis-hap as a blessing, as its allowing me to correct a few things wrong i did last time round.

cheers.joe.

ps. i'll keep you all posted

It creates a uniformly stressed layer of metal on the outside of the part. For a fracture to begin, this stressed, toughened layer must first be breached. It's a bit like binding a limb so it can't develop a strain or sprain.

the process of shot peening is when there are shite loads of little tiny ball bearings being fired at a certin metal part with a high intense speed.

what it does is it forces the metal molecules to compact togeather thus making the part stronger.

i highly recomend getting this done on any high hp car.

with rods get it done, but do not polish/linish them afterwards as this re-weakens them.

cheers.joe.

ahhh...
wouldn't nitriding do the same?*
.... or could you shot-peen them, then nitride them...

SUPER INVINCIBLE ROD MAN!!!!!!!
or something like it....

* i know it wouldn't, but it would be similar, yes?

not really warranted, the flacon sohc rods are forged from factory, shot peening them = 700hp garenteed rods!!

and the cranks in the ef (1996) or newer cars have been proven to 800hp as well.

add to that the ef block with a set of au mains caps you have a 700hp capable virtually standard motor!!. gotta love it.

cheers.joe.

Sorry to here about your motor.
But photos would be good.
At least for the rest of us anyway.
Noel.

gm dstroya is also a 900 HP Ford dstroya. Now I know why you picked that fabulous name of yours. Better luck next time.
Tim.

Damn that sucks Joe.

I was reading your first post just hoping it was posted on April Fools Day but it wasn't to be. Gotta be pleased with what you have achieved though.

Great to see your getting straight back into it. Show us what the Falcon I6 can do.

good old aussie mentality, wasnt there a discusion of
' pushing it till it breaks'

have you guys heard of the cryotuff , cryogenics to give parts strength. up to 300% stronger costs 5$ per kilo , and you can do anything from block ,to valve springs to driveline stuff

wish i got it done on my parts before the machine shop :( :( :(

the cryotech stuff will be utilised by me for sure,

i've scrapped the ef motor option now, its up for sale, its a 700hp capable engine complete and assembeled for 4200.

i have got an au engine on order, its a VCT one,

the crank, block, mains caps, crank girdle, rockers, valves basicly everything.

i will be de-strokeing the stroke of the crank a smidge, and making up for it in bore diameter, and also fitting some custom 6.5 inch rods with custom pistons

in hope to make the motor rev a bit more, a tremec 5 spd is also on its way now as the supra 5 spd will definatly not handle the new engine.

this engine is copping, forged pistons, forged rods and a cryotreated motor, compression will be at 8.2 to 1, the cylinder head is a au vct one with the variable cam timing, this is to be ported as per the last cylinder just with a bit of extra work.

boost is to be run at 34 psi, and i hope to rev the engine to 7k. i really want to pull 900fwhp or 700rwhp and have it ready to rumble by june 20 next year, just in time for the ford Vs holden car show/dyno war, i wanna blow ls1 v8's apart.

cheers.joe.

i'll keep you all posted on how i go.

geez you must have piles of $ laying around , still better spend the dough on a ford than any oother piece of junk

Go hard or go holden

oh by the way why didnt ya go the ba engine . with twin cam and dual vct it would seem a better starting point??? they cant be that much dearer than the au , maybe find it in a wrecker

i've looked into it, the au sohc VCT engine complete is 1800. this engine has done 18000k's and was in a au series 3 fairmont.

the ba is 3700 at its cheapest with already 80,000k's and ran on gas.

i personly like the 2 valves per cylinder set up, its more simpler, plus there isnt valve springs and cams availale yet

basicly theres no support net, for mods, every thing is off my own back, mistakes and all, this was the case when i started boosting my ea, not a lot of support.

i may yet go with the ba engine tho, i wouldnt mind pushing the fronteir of the motor development, but its just cash,

the au motor, i port the head my self, come up with my own grinds for the cam,i assemble the engine my self, fabricate all the ancillaries, the only thing i farm out is machine work.

cheers.joe.
