Oil around head bolt

I did a ring and valve job this spring, and today I noticed oil around the front two head bolts on the passenger side, and some oil around the front two plugs. I wanted to check the torque on the heads and I'm sure it was 40 lbs and if it is the torque is fine. I tried to find on the home page the head torque specs and I can't find them. If this isn't the problem anyone got any suggestions as to why the oil. I checked the valve cover and it seems fine. I cleaned the oil off of the head bolts and started the car up. I swear I could see oil seeping out around the head bolt.

I still don't see them at the bottom of the page is a picture of the timing chain. I have looked at every spec and don't see the head torquing. I know I went by what was on there and I guess the 40Ib number stuck in my head but I am going to check it out .

Just went out to check and they are at least 70Ib. the head was shaved to allow for the thicker head gasket but, I know my compression has increased because if the battery isn't right up it has trouble turning it over and when I shut it off the engine stops very quickly. My point is could the head bolts be bottoming out? Would the tolerance be that close at the bottom of the head?

Another reason to use studs for head bolts.
Remember to shorten the rf stud to prevent interference with the water pump impeller & install sealer cause this is the only stud to be exposed to the cooling system. Bill

I took a look at the car and realize that the bolt your talking about does what you say. It has a stud on it that the battery cable attaches to, the reason I missed it as a head bolt. I don't remember putting sealant on it or grinding it down a little. I can assume that since the water pump works that there is no damage to the pump. Can I take out one head bolt at time and grind some off the end of it to make sure they are not bottoming out? That is if its possible for them to bottom out. Thanks for the input

Yes, if you do one at a time. Drain the cooling system before you apply sealant to the rf passengers side head bolt. If its the stock bolt it should not hit the water pump impeller. After torqueing it just spin the water pump to be on the safe side. Bill

Yes they can bottom out, so you best check all head bolts to see if they bottomed out. Bill

Removed a bolt and measured the dept of the bolt hole and there is a good quarter of an inch more than the bolt so if they bottom out it would have to be because the threads don't go deep enough. There was no oil on the bolt body and after thinking about it I don't know where oil would come from if the torque wasn't enough I assume I would be getting anti freeze. I have come to the conclusion that although I can't see it the oil must be coming out of the valve cover gasket. I'm ordering a new one and will see what happens.
