Oil-pan Install & Pics

I ordered a new FelPro oil pan gasket kit (cork) but it won't be in 'til 2pm today. Thought I would post some pics of the last attempt, concerns I have and info on the sealant I used. Hope to get a little more feedback regarding the condition of my pan, ie., looks bent to me at the front cover. Let me know what you thin, and Adam is that the permatex #3 you were talking about?

Well, I took the pan off and I am glad I did, one side was fine and the other was split on the inside and outside.....Still don't know why, maybe one side cured a little too much, but I didn't have too much on it it just did spread out across the flange and had about an 1/8th in. on either side---none inside the engine casing. Oh well, I have the felpro kit and will try it again tomorrow if I can get to it.

The round tin looks a little more like it. First picture are both silicones. My Permatex #3 is in a little plastic bottle with red screw cap incorporating a brush. Contents are a tarry-looking syrup with slight sweet/burned smell.

FWIW, the other reason I avoid silicones is because of doing a bit of paint & panel. Contamination is a real risk.

Either way chosen, you need to "loop" around bolt holes with your sealant.

The stuff in the bottle never solidifys..it is for all types of stuff and looks as you describe brown and syrupy. But it is not permatex...Is there a brand number like the one on the lid here...

By the way are there folks who can straighten out the flange of the oil pan? Mine seems to have slight bends at the corners, don't think that is normal---but I ain't going to try to straighten it myself.

My car fell off a jack onto the oil pan. Put a big dent but no puncture.
Since I could NOT find a replacement that wasn't already dented, the place I took it to offer to recondition mine. They hammered it out acid bath, sandblasted, painted, re-installed and it looks great. No leaks, and when the engine was up I decided it was a good time for new motor/trans mounts as well. And oil pump and pickup replaced.

Take it to an engine rebuilder. A body shop guy could probably do the reconditioning but I don't know if I'd want them doing any engine work.

The last time I checked on a new--stock oil pan the cheapest I could find was $170.00 or something like that...so Jackfish I will ask around here to see if I can find someone who can straighten out the pan.

Adam I looked at that site and it list the Permatex Aviation as conforming to MIL S 45180D and the stuff I have conforms to MIL S 45180C. So I will find the right Permatex #3 sealant in an Auto parts store here somewhere. I have used the stuff I have on Hoses and stuff like that but not much else.

Thanx
