My engine has had sludge on it since I bought my Maverick back in Feb of 2002. The previous owner neglected the car beyond belief there is oil sludge and grime all over the engine I scrapped alot of it off but for the longest time I couldn't figure out why it was like this. One thing is certain though the Oil Pan gasket is shot as are both the front and rear seals, With my tranny, clutch, and flywheel removed I was able to furthur inspect the pilot bearing area, the rear seal is 3/4 of the way gone, oil was dripping off the flywheel when it was removed, there is sludge inside the bellhousing, it's everywhere. The oil pan is being dropped fairly soon i'll probably do that before the drivetrain gets put back together to make it a little easier to get at the rear oil pan bolts, but i'm wondering if this could be a symptom of a much larger problem. What do ya all think Engine Rebuild Time? I'm thinkin about at least an overhaul sometime this year, one of my New Years Resolutions is to get this 200 healthy again and out of the sick state it's in now. Makes you wonder how someone could neglect a car like this, I never will thats for sure.

I guess before you start thinking rebuild, you ought to check out the rest of the engine. Compression, Oil Pressure, relative performance. It might just be that the PO was a lazy bastard that figured it was easier to put in more oil then to fix the leaks. But OTOH with the shear number of leaks you got, maybe it would be easier to pull the motor and freshen it up, rings/rods/mains/gaskets.... As always time and $$ will most likely be your deciding factors.

Im of the opinion that at this point it doesnt matter. With the rear main seal gone it is time for a rebuild. There are kits that will let you pull a new rope seal in place but I would just go ahead and rebuild the engine. You seem to have a grasp of what condition it is in.

8) i am with A here, it si time to freshen up the motor, not so much because it is worn out, but so you can get in and prevent future problems that lack of maintenance creates.
