overheating in xm with 250 2v

hey all
i am having problems with a 250 2v in an xm overheating. i currently have two 10" electronic fans on the front of a 3 core mustang radiator.

what i am wanting to know is what engine fan are people using to clear the radiator and fan belts on their 250 when the engine is mounted in the standard mounting position.

i cannot find any that do not foul off any standard falcon.
any suggestions would be very helpful.

cheers

Dell,
Hi, I had a 250 crossflow in my xm. I had a standard four blade fan. Dilled and holes filed to fit straight onto the waterpump hub. No spacer.
An Xa three core downflow radiator. No cooling probs. Always ran at half on the gauge.

An XM 250 isn't an A9X 308 Torana. The Falcon has a very restricted engine bay radiator supprt panel. The engine is very tall, and the top of a stockXA-XF fan hits the bigger XA-XC Radiators.

The I6 pushes the fan 3 inches further forward than a 302 Windsor.

The A9X Torana used thermo fans becasue the engine bay was huge, and it wasn't hard to get air through to the 308 V8. The greatest lie that has been told about brillant Davis Craig fans is that one or two electric fans sort out over heating problems. They don't. They just eliminate fan roar and consume less engine power while overloading the alternator and battery. If the radiator and cooling system is properly bleed of air while the engine is cold, and a high proportion of anti freeze and a high pressure radiator cap with coolant recovery is used, and the water pump is good quality, then you have to go back to the most basic tools

The Mini guys taught us years ago that the solution is to go back to a four blade fan. It always provides more pitch, and more wind rush from idle to full rpm. Yeah, it may be hard to fit a 250 into an XM with it, but it works.

Go see Summernats, and see electric cooling fan engines overheating.

Xman,
Good to hear from you' X grassy noel here.

Yes, The biggest radiator and many fans will not cure a problem.
Check all the obvious for a cooling/overheating problem.
Look at the coolant, waterpump, hoses, belts and radiator condition.
Many, many lines of dialog on early falcon cooling in this area.
look for the problem or get someone who knows what to do properly to look at it.
Also, my fan was the original 170, four blade fan. Centre drilled out to 7/8 of an inch and bolt holes filed.
Happy motoring,
Noel.

thanks for the intelligent replys fellas

i have since unfortunately done many of the things you have advised agianst

i found out my radiator was for 170 - 200 and was probably not big enough for a warmed over 250 so bigger radiator 3 core mustang.
Also an ice 14 inch thermo mounted on the front of the radiator.
all i needed to do was move the centre grill support and remount the bonnet catch.

with a thermo switch from a vb-vh commy switch the temp sits in the perfect 78 - 85 range

the engine is only about 3000kms old so i knew it was not a factor, i believe the two smaller electric fans i had on the front were not up to the task.

still i do appriciate all the help and would reccomend to anyone doing this conversion of a 250 into an xk-xp to perservere and use the original engine fan.

I have not had overheating problems, but on my XE (250 crossflow) I dumped the clutch fan and installed a pair of fans off an EL falcon... What a job! I had to butcher the fan brackets, the power steering pump had to be moved back, the shroud had to be chopped, etc. etc. It keeps it cool, though, but I will have to wait until it gets hotter to find out how cool. I also have a big 3 core radiator. I think some of the problems with the aftermarket fans is they don't have enough shrouding to keep the air going through the radiator - they just bolt up and don't suck enough cold air through to where it is needed. Maybe that is why the EL set work OK?

hey
ok does it over heat while driving along?
if it does its the thermo's blocking the air coming into the raditor about 30%loss.
put an engine fan on and you will be sweet if it get a bit warm up the while siting in traffic up the revs a bit and it draws more air.
