OK, it's not a phantom pregnancy then. To test the TDC, you need to make a"positive stop". This typically uses a gutted spark plug with a a bolt passing through the centre. You might get lucky and find an M18×1.25 bolt, about 3" long. It'll just screw in the plug threads.
You raise the #1 piston to the point where it's believed at the top, and screw the bolt through the plug until it touches the piston. Now rotate the crank a little, and add a turn to the bolt. Next step is to raise the piston once more until the bolt hits it. Stop and make a visible mark on the balancer, aligned with the timing pointer "0". Now counter-rotate the crank almost a turn, until the bolt is again struck by the piston approaching. Make another mark.
Measure halfway between these marks to get a true position of TDC. Mark it, if it's not the balancer notch. You will use this hence, for setting the timing.
The stocking is like women wear; the fine type of material not fishnet. It only needs to go about 4" inside the radiator header tank, and about 1½" over the tank's hose nozzle. Cut the rest off first. Remember to remove it from the woman's foot before cutting or installing.
Your MoFoCo manual will have distributor advance with RPM settings for a Sun machine. You need to double these RPM for testing on your car (I think, unless the machines are compensated). Not advancing enough at higher RPM, low load situations, is equivalent to retarding the timing - and we know that causes heat. It won't hurt to verify those weights are correct.
