hey fellow sixers. i own two 66 mustangs: a 289 convertible and a 200 coupe. ive been checking this site out for a while and im slowly learning how to upgrade the performance on my 6. since my coupe will be a daily driver, i want something that will give me an extra punch but nothing too wild and extreme. i was thinking of dual exhaust and a new cam. after that im pretty much in the blue on what i need to do. what do you guys recommend for my daily driver coupe. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. thank you

Well, do your plans include full electronic ignition (Duraspark)? It ought be first up. Power and economy with that one. A cam change is good, but the timing set and lifters are pretty much called for as well, so the cost is not so cheap. Improved carburetion is an asset of sorts, but again it is not a 100% ready to fit deal.

Baseline first up: Measure your engine's compression when hot, consider the state of the transmission (whatever type), and all other ambitions, plus budget... Give us some answers here, and you'll get steered in the most productive manner.

Regards, Adam.

the handbook!! you must get the Ford six cylinder bible!!!

and do what Addo suggested

the handbook can be found here, $15 not too shabby

yes i was planning on the duraspark ignition and i thought about 2v carburetion but i am a little lost in how you do it. ill try to check up on that though. i dont know the compression right now(its kinda late), but can find out another day. im using a c4 trans also. my ambitions are basically a fairly strong engine that is still drivable on a daily basis without sacrificing comfort. i dont want to add anything too complicated because im not too familiar with the 200. just bolt on or fairly easy mods i can do at home. my budget is not a large factor, but im a high school student and im not "rolling in dough" either. since im rebuilding a engine while i still drive my stock six, i want to do everything right so ill be ready to just drop it in when time comes. thanks for the help

stop!!
how far have you gone on your rebuild?
what have you done, and what are your plans?

if you can determine what you want of the engine now, it'll be much easier to do, and much easier on the wallet than if you just do a stock rebuild and then later decide that you want to do something different

get the bible, it'll explain most everything you need

I think he said that he was driving it and rebuilding the 289 ?

Hey Vintage,
as you found out we live very near each other. Gotta see your car someday man, mine's my daily ride as well. I have done the Duraspark and the headers and Holley 2300 2v carb so if you need help, holler. Also, Import Killer lives in the Boro too and if it werent for him Id be screwed. Dan is a goood goood man. Oh well, Holler dude, Im here in the boro all weekend and will be again next weekend if you wanna talk about doin anything.

i dunno... from what i read he was building a new 200 to drop in...

a lot of the stuff we have done is basically "bolt on" (depends on your definition of "bolt on" though)

just for clarification, are you building up a new I6 to drop in the mustang, or rebuilding a 289?

i think the only non bolt on mods usually recommended are regular power builders
balancing the rotating assembly (highly recommended)
porting
milling the head
bigger valves
and so on and so forth...

everything else is pretty easy

clarification: rebuilding the 200 to drop in. havent started yet. i want to build the 200 with the mods on it already. probably will start sometime this winter, until i get the rest of my restoration squared away.

If you want Turbo, you should get some custom pistons made from like Ross pistons or the like. You'll need low compression pistons. get your static compression below 8:1 so you can run at up to 8-10 PSI on pump gas.

HOwever, if you aren't ready for the turbo, the low compression pistons will cost you some power until you get it. if you were going to stay NA, then get some flat top Tempo 2.3L pistons

Definitely new cam. If you want the car streetable, I think 272-280 is about the limit. I have a 260 and it is perfect for a driver.

Hey guys.
i pretty much have a stock 200 with a C4 on it. I eventually want to get a '78 head and dual outlet headers.. but now that i read this i wonder if turbo is a possibility for a 200? Are there kits out for it? Also, would you need an intercooler and such?

ok, good stuff
like i said, the only things that aren't bolt-on stuff are in that post above

stanger - do a search for "turbo" you should find plenty of research
there isn't a kit yet, but plans are in the making for fabricating the parts necessary
