I have the pertronix II. It works great for me. But I think I've heard complaints from others on the forum about the 2nd one. Hopefully they'll chime in too.
I believe one difference is if you leave the ignition with the II it will not fry.
I had a II in my mustang & the engine would die at idle or erratically idle rough. I removed the II & reinstalled the I. Have had no problems since.
Go with the pertronix I. William
I had the II setup on my car with the 45,000 volt coil and found that it had a weak spark. I'm pretty sure thats the reason my car would sometimes idle erratically or stall and when it wasn't doing that it the idle was rough. Oh and the engine would turn over three or more times before starting. It's supposed to provide more spark energy above three grand; I now currently have points with the 45,000 volt coil and feel no difference at all except smooth idle no erratic idle and the engine starts consistantly at the end of the first revolution even on cold mornings. If your going to get a pertronix unit I would go with pertronix I if thats not good enough to do what you want it to you could always hook it up to a MSD box or the like.
