Anybody have Pertronix electronic ignition on a 62 or 63 170? They
only have Ford listed on the website as #1266. Nothing for Merc. I
know it should be interchangable, but just want to be sure. If
anybody has bought it & has the # please post it. If you got it
through JC Whitney, include thier sku# too if you have it.
Thanks!

David -

I'm using the Pertronix II + the 45,000 volt Flamethrower 2 coil in both my '61 Comet S-22 (170) and '65 Mustang (200). $79.95 (PII) + $36.95 for the coil thru Mustangs Unlimited. Nice part about the Pertronix II vs. the Pertronix I is that you won't burn out the module if you accidently leave the ignition on without the motor running. Plus the PII adjusts dwell. The part number for the PII is 91266 for the 170 and 200 sixes. Ford & Merc numbers are the same. Money well spent!

David,

I had done the Petronix conversion on my 170 prior to the engine developing a knock and starting me on my current journey. I am using the Flamethrower coil on my 200 but you can have the Petronix if you want. It was on there for about 6 months. I'm not sure if I still have the instructions.

Shoot!
I just ordered it from Mustangs Unltd. I went for the PII since it will not fry if I leave the key on. It was ascheap from these guys as the PI is from JC Whitney. About $30-40 cheaper than everywhere else. I'm going with this upgrade to hopefully eliminate my rough idle. I can't seem to get it dialed in.
Thanks for the help!

The PII straightened out the rough idle on my '61 (170) and the '65 (200) starts and idles smoothly on even the coldest mornings. You'll like it!

OK, So I put the PII in my 170 & tried to dial in the timing. I think it's sitting somewhere around 12-14 advanced. It runs smoothest there. However, it still runs way too rough. Has the same stumble. Here's what I've done so far:
PII
new cap, rotor, wires
40,000 V coil
rebuilt head
dual out header w/ dual exaust

Could it be the carb needs to be replaced? What rpm should I be at when I time it?

Thanks,
DK

Did you remove the ballast resistor in the ignition line between the key and the + side of the coil. All of the old Fords had one. If you hook the Pertronix to the coil as a power source it won't work for long, if at all. The ballast resistor is located under the dash in the red line between the switch and the firewall. It will take the form of a small rectangular box (usually white) or a resistor wire in the line. It is easy to spot. If you are running a PII you simply cut it out of the line. Also have you changed to a 12-volt coil? If not your old coil wont be able to keep up and will eventually fail.

OK forget that last one.

If your carb sat and dried out while you were having your head rebuilt, your carb may need to be rebuilt. First check for vacuum leaks. As far as your timing, don’t forget to block off the vacuum advance (see shop manual or performance handbook). I like mine at about 800 RPM and 8 to 10 degrees of advance.
