Pertronix, THERMACTOR question

I have my engine almost ready to go but have a question about the pertronix unit that was previously installed on my old engine.

My current engine is a 68 block with a dual vacuum advance distributor. My old block was a 66 block with single vacuum advance distributor.

Can I use the same pertronix unit? The reason I ask is that when I look in the Mustangs Unlimited catalog it lists cars with and without a THERMACTOR. What is the thermactor?

Slade

Slade,
There are 4 basic Pertronix units for our engines. Daul Vac Thermactor, Dual Vac Non-Thermactor, Dual Advance Thermactor, and Dual Advance Non-Thermactor. The Pertronix unit is tied to the distributor. If you use your original dizzy, you can keep the pertronix unit, if you change to the dual advance dizzy, you will have to get the Pertronix for that unit. The with or without Thermactor is basicaly with or without Smog Pump. The dizzies are different. The shaft is shaped differently. TheThermactor/Smog Pump has a C shaped shaft inside the dizzy, while the Non-Thermactor has a D shaped shaft. My choice would be Dual Advance, Non Thermactor.

HI SLADE,

AS BILL SAID, THE THERMACTOR / NON-THERMACTOR IS THE METHOD USED TO DETERMINE WHICH DIZZY ORIGINALLY CAME WITH THE CAR. AS FEW OF US ARE RUNNING ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT VEHICLES THIS METHOD OF DETERMINING THE CORRECT UNIT FOR YOUR CAR MAY NOT WORK (PROBABLY WON'T). FOR THE RECORD IT IS THE DISTIBUTOR DRIVE THAT MAKES THE DIFFERENCE. ONE OF THE PERTRONIX UNITS FITS THE DIZZY WITH A "D" SHAPED DRIVE, THE OTHER FITS THE DIZZY WITH THE SLOTTED DRIVE, I.E., IF YOUR ROTOR HAS A KEY IN IT YOU NEED THE PERTRONIX UNIT FOR THE "C" / SLOTTED / KEYED DRIVE. I DON'T REMEBER WHICH IS WHICH NOW (THERMACTOR OR NOT), BUT PERTRONIX IS VERY GOOD ABOUT TAKING TECH CALLS. AS A MATTER OF FACT, THEY EXCHANGED MINE FOR ME WHEN I DISCOVERED I HAD THE WRONG ONE.

AS FOR THE DIZZY IN YOUR CAR, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THE DUAL ADVANCE UNIT (VAC + MECHANICAL) AND CONVERTING TO MECHANICAL ONLY SYSTEM. THIS TOPIC HAS COME UP IN A NUMBER OF IGNITION POST, BUT IN YOUR CASE, I SUSPECT YOU WILL NOT GET THE BEST OUT OF YOUR TRI-CARB SET-UP TRYING TO USE A VAC SYSTEM (SINGLE OR DUAL). THE CONVERSION IS VERY SIMPLE, BUT YOU WILL NEED TO START WITH A DUAL ADVANCE UNIT. PM ME IF YOU WOULD LIKE MORE INFO. I USE THIS SET-UP ON MY CAR. I BELIEVE THERE ARE SEVERAL OTHERS WHO HAVE MADE THE SWITCH.

LOOKING FORWARD TO HEARING MORE ABOUT YOUR CAR WHEN DONE. MAJOR UNDERTAKING. MAY TAKE A LITTLE TIME TO SORT OUT WHEN DONE, BUT, THERE IS A VERY SIMILAR TRI-POWER CONVERT HERE IN SO CAL I HAVE VISITED WITH SEVERAL TIMES AND HE IS QUITE CONFIDENT HIS CAR MAKES 180+ HP (USES MECHANICAL ONLY DIZZY - I GOT THE CONFIDENCE TO TRY IT FROM HIM).

Slade,
From what I can tell, you can use your current setup. You do have the 68' dual advance dizzy w/Pertronix already installed correct? If that is what you currently have, yes you can drop right in.

Hi Slade,

If your 68 dizzy and your 66 dizzy have the same drive your pertronix will fit either one, and either dizzy will fit either block.

Do I understand that you are going to use the dual vac unit. I assume you can make this work because you are using 1100's on your tri-carb and you are going to use the center carb to drive the dual vac (you will need a spark control valve to run this dizzy and they only came in the 1100). Sorry to be the nay-sayer, but this dizzy is not the best choice. Your engine is modified enough that the stock dual vac advance curve will not produce the best results. AND, the dual vac curve (amount of advance) is very difficult to adjust (actually, impossible). It will work, the car should run well, buy you'll never get max performance and you will be committed to 1100's.

Just my 2 cents - Steve

Steve,

I hear you...but I do not have the time to search for a Duraspark. Eventually I will upgrade to it, but I only have 24 days to get the car running so I can move it to my new house. Once the car is together and running, I'll start hitting the junkyards again. I'm just using this one for now to get the car running.
