Port Divider Question

Hey Guys,
One quick question about a port divider. I want to add a header at a later date, but I am going to be getting a rebuilt engine soon. I don't have the extra money for a header now, but I would like to have the shop weld in a port divider now so it is ready when I have the money.

My question is, will the divider be fine with the stock manifold until I can put a header in? Any problem in installing it now, and then just using the stock exhaust manifold with the port divider until I can install a header? I don't see a problem, but I thought I would check with people who have far more experience then I do.

I found a picture and price from the clifford site. How exactally does it fit, does it weld to the head or into the exhaust. As mentioned on the first post, this could be used on the stock log?? thanx

The port divider welds into the head, or it can be pinned in or some guys have tried epoxy to hold it in place, I think if you do a search for "port divider" you will find all the posts related to it.

Yes, the port divider will work with the factory exhaust manifold.

The is a third way to put it in. I use an "interference fit". When I grind the piece from Clifford - You'll need at least an hour of grinding and test fitting - either with a 4" angle grinder or on a bench grinder - I am careful to NOT grind off the inner edge so much that the outter edge (manifold side) gets below the head's surface.

I leave the divider sticking out of the exhaust port .025 to .035 (that's about the thickness of a healthy thumbnail or the gap on a points spark plug). That way, when I torque up my exhaust manifold, the divider is gently squished into place without putting undo pressure on the head. Caution: I do use a exhaust manifold gasket! The gasket's thickness compensates for the divider sticking out of the head.

All this sounds complicated, but it is really not. You will need a bench grinder or an angle grinder to fit the divider - I have NEVER seen a divider that will drop into place.

Thanks Everyone,
I really like this idea of grinding the divider so that it will compress into the head and be held in place. This takes some pressure off of me, and allows me to get that all set up after I install my engine.

Let me get one thing straight..... you said that the divider won't fit when it comes from Clifford and that I should expect to have to grind it down to fit no matter what? Also, is Clifford the only place one can find a divider or can you get them anwhere else?

Yup, you get to grind no matter what.

I have "heard" that Hooker supplies a port divider with its headers, but I don't know for sure.

The Aussie headers that FordSixParts.com has use a Clifford divider from Autokrafters or Cliffords.

Hooker headers do come with a divider. I have a set on my Falcon and love them. Russell

Click on my sig pic and click on the "New Pics" album. The last two pics show the port divider in place. I epoxied mine in place with Resbond 907GF Epoxy . Your stock manifold will fit with the port divider installed.
