Prepping for a first drive in 5 years.

I will be bleeding the brakes tomorrow.
The brakes have surface rust, and the rear drums had been sitting in one spot long enough that they had rusted solidly, pushing the car up on the trailer and rolling her off broke everything loose enough that I think a drive will burn most of it off. Will verify that when I pull the rear drums though.

Have not found any leaks and the fluid levels are good.

Need to find a better solution for the return spring of the clutch.

Gas is old, tank is roughly half full, so I'll get new gas and pour it in to dilute the old stuff, I was thinking of getting an additive to try and break down varnish.

I'm just going up the block and back to the house, just to verify that everything is working properly.
I would chance going for a mile drive or so without having her registered or insurance, but the brake lights don't work right now and the exhaust is straight open headers, so that's a definite no-go.

Anything else I should check?

Have fun, just go slow to start and remember where the ignition (to turn it off) and the ebrake (providing it works) are so if things don't go to plan you can get it stopped. All the rust in the drums will 'burn off' after a few hard braking sessions. But be warned the first couple times they may 'grab' on one side or the other and try to toss you in the ditch.

That test drive bit is one of the reasons I am happy to live outside of town.. I have a 3 mile long gravel road right in front of my house.. 1.5miles north to the highway and then I can go back 3 miles South to the next gravel road.

Was this the one you dropped off the trailer a couple years back or was that another guy?

I actually have an easy to access kill-switch on the dash.
I'm more concerned that the neighbors will wig out from the noise.

I bought a 68 a couple three years ago for some parts, but Susie has never actually fallen off a trailer, she has only been on a trailer maybe three or four times in the dozen years or more that I have had her

Then it wasn't you.

Do you remember that story of some guy here and/or his father in law who lost a car off their trailer and it rolled into the ditch? They went back with flashlights to find it hidden in the bushes and managed to retrieve it with no damage done.

Good luck with your car. I have every faith in you, man. You haven't let me down yet.

I dislike grabbing brakes, I'd use emory cloth to knock down the rust in the drums.

Why don't cars come standard with these? Seems that carefully placed master kill switches could help with a few issues that people have had that ended in accidents...

1st double ck for fuel leaks under hood - incase of fire - may B let er run w/hood open @ home.
I too can 'test drive' w/o much neighbor complaints or cops & traffic. I'd try something to "take care" of these folks...

Hopin U ck the coolant sys too.
