i thought i had a a worn out flexplate but i found out that the starter catches the flexplate but the flexplate spins freely both ways. do you guys think it is a broken crankshaft? if not can you guys give me an i dea of what it might be? and how much it would cost to get the crank replaced? thanks in advance.

The starter doesn't catch the flexplate. The starter engages the ring gear welded to the torque converter. If your converter is spinning and then engine is not, then your flexplate has sheared around the center.
 
the ring on my car is welded to the flexplate not the torque converter. i bought the new flexplate for it and it bolts on.
 
It is only 1965 and earlier 6 cyl. ring gears that were welded to the torque convertor.

Did you check to see if maybe the studs on the torque convertor that connect it to the flex plate may have sheared off?

No, actually. They were like that into the 80s. Nathan must have a big bell 200.

Maybe I don't fully understand the problem. Had his torque converter studs sheared off, the engine would still be able to spin and start (as he states that the flexplate spins freely).
 
Or the center of the flexplate may have broken away from the outer. Seen that happen on the small six flexplate. It happens on the big ones occasionally. This one is a Mopar, but the same thing could have happened on a Ford.
