pulled my plugs today and found something annoying

Ok well today i pulled my plugs today to regap them. Well everything was looking good, no deposits, nothing looking too bad, then i get to the fifth plug and i pull it out and its got all these white and grey deposits on it, all over the place. So i cleaned it off a little for now cause i didn't have time to buy new plugs for it (had to go to school). At first i assumed that it was due to being rich, or lean, so i thought cylinder six would be bad too (after all they share a log). Nope cylinder six was just like the rest, in fact it was kind of good because lately i'd noticed that it sounded like i had a miss at idle (glug glug glug......glug glug glug......) so this got rid of that, but still annoying cause i don't know why its got those.

I'll probably go buy new plugs tomorrow, and then install them too of course :). Other then that i just have to fix my balast resistor, for some reason the remake wires come with a slideon thing for it, but i really need a terminal type cause the slideon doesnt hold onto the coil and slips off sometimes.

Basically what do you guys think could cause these deposits. I'll take it out tomorrow and take a picture hopefully that will help.

My first thought was too far advanced, but since it's only one cylinder, I believe that negates that theory. Dare I say it, maybe a slight head gasket leak? It maybe getting a bit of water in there. Do the easy stuff first, new plug and check your valve settings. Make sure that plug wire is reading correctly (ohms).

You better get back to looking busy in your cubicle there. It's not even 8:00!

Seriously tho - a single cylinder problem that is pretty much guaranteed to be the hardware for that cylinder. Especially if you have swapped through the ignition parts and it still does it.

So, headgasket, rings, or valves. (We will stay away from the unlikely ones like cracked head or block.

Do a compression and a leakdown test, and you can confirm that suspicion.

Howdy Ron and All:

It is possible that the deposits are caused by something as simple as a weak or bad spark plug, a marginal plug wire, or a bad terminal or crack in the distributor cap.

Starting with a new set of plugs, or just switching the location of spark plugs in cylinders 4 and 5. If that doesn't reveal the problem, switch plug wires between 4 & 5. Make sure all plugs are the same manufacture, heat range and gap.

Check the distributor cap by removing, visually checking for cracks or other problems, and wiggle the post. It should not be loose at all.

An intermittant miss can often be a single cylinder spark problem.

Adios, David
