quick oil pan q?

Do i need to use a gasket sealer, i tried asking the guy behind the counter at the auto parts store but he was on the phone, talking to me and yelling spanish at some kids running through the store so all he said was probally not? So should i or will i be ok? Thanks
 
Do a dry fit first, with all mating faces perfectly clean. If it looks good to go, I would suggest a sealant myself. Some like RTV, but I'd go for Blue Hylomar - it's thinner and remains tackier, longer. Pay attention to the very light torquing of those bolts.

If you are installing the pan gaskets on an engine stand, lay all 2 rail gaskets & the rubber end gaskets inplace. Where the rubber seals mate with the pan rails apply permatex grey or toyota FIPG sealer on the mating surfaces where the pan contacts all 4 corners.
However if you are doing from underneath i use contact cement on the pan rail gaskets at 2 spots per side to keep the gasket from falling down & still apply the above sealant on the 4 corners where the rubber meets the pan rail gaskets. bill
 
With cork gaskets and oil stuff I have had the best luck putting them on dry. You need some sealer at the ends and where all the various bits go together. Its amazing that the back does not leak worse with all the joints back there. In the case of a bent pan I dont bother with the gasket. Lay a nice fat bead and let it sit for a few hours. Install the pan with all the bolts just tight enough to make contact and let it cure the rest of the way then finish tightening.
 
DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN THE BOLTS! Use a blue threadlock compound on the threads so the bolts don't loosen and fall. :shock:

Did I say: DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN?
 
If youo use sealant only, make sure you use a small, round bead, rather than a flat coating. You don't want the sealant oozing into the crankcase and plugging up your oilpump pickup screen. :shock:

That's right. Just as the factory did on my 92 Ranger. :evil:
